I'm sure I could whip up a cable.

I've got some Canare, either blue or red, and plenty of Neutrik minis as well which I would be happy to contribute. I also have enough Mogami mini if that would work better.

Hey, I said it first. dibs. :P

Well things have gotten off to quite a start - perhaps that pipe dream of an HD800 wasn't a pipe dream after all or perhaps he will be introduced to the planar population enforce with a smeggy wood fostex and some form of staxen to test his poor man's creation.

This is where we stand :

I think we should start getting some opinions in as to which headphones people prefer

The DIY option has started to roll and will offer a unique experience.

I have looked at a few options:

1. Good used Stax being sold by The Monkey - SR Lambda Pro

2. Current commercial offerings:

Sennheiser

HD600 - $450

HD650 - $500

Beyer

DT880 - $400

AKG

k701 - $540

k702 - $540

Dennon

AH D2000 - $350

AH D500 - $699

AT

W5000 - $699 (sale)

Grado

RS-1 - $550

Today I shipped the 1/8" Neutrik terminated Canare quad cable with matched pair of SFI 120R and two kinds of felt and fake chamois from ericj.

Smeggy, I also threw in a surprise for you to keep, in appreciation of the work you donated on my Smegma Pros.

What does Alex like? It's best to get that sound rather than something that I or someone else prefers. Do you know what kind of sound he prefers? Has he mentioned a desire for some of the headphones that you listed?

this is the 10 million dollar question. We have discussed classical music in passing and I think he likes stage music but more genre specific I have no idea. I know he has little if any experience with "hi end" headphones and I am a little envious of his ability to sit back and enjoy the music without looking for more and more detail. This all came about because we were discussing just this. I honestly feel any of the top performers will fill the niche. Each of the headphones have their virtues and I have listened to them all bar the Denons. ( or the staxen) I don't think there is a "wrong" option amongst them.

just to stir the mud to even consistency :D ..dB

I would go for the HD600, with an HD650 cable.

I have heard everything on that list except the Beyer, and the only ones I could not live with were the W5000.

the headphone running thus far seems to be between the "normal" players

k702 / RS1 / HD600/650

It's not working probably because deepak edited it to hide your email from crawlers. It's in the URL and you just have to copy the whole thing and cut out the email address part and send payment to there.

It needs updated again so no worries - if you wouldn't mind removing the link and changing it to read PM me. that way I don't have to think about it again - I am going to edit out the links on HF when this is over.

thanks again..dB
