the DPS would be a better power supply. Generally speaking with amplifiers, the better the power supply, the better your results will be.

But didn't Justin discontinue making them because the sonic improvements weren't significant (or was it just not cost effective, I forget)? Or different circuit = worth giving it a try?

Justin said the DPS wasn't cost-effective. And don't you think he would never have made a DPS if the improvements (sonic or otherwise) weren't significant?

The part no. is Elpac WM071-1950 with no D5 at the end. It looks like this, which is different from what you linked above:

And the Data Sheet pdf linked on the page you link to seems to be correct and have an image like what I have here.

The D5 in the part number means a DIN-5 connector, which is what the TTVJ pic and your Elpac pic use. Interesting that clicking on the datasheet link goest to iccus corp. who it appears bought elpac. Looking at the commercial lineup, I don't see the WM071 listed anymore, though it is in the WM.pdf datasheet still, but that is an Elpac datasheet. Doesn't bode well for commercial gear using this PSU unless it is an oversight.

If it was a Pre-Amp output, don't you think it would say Pre Out?

I know it should... But voltron said he was using it as a pre-amp. Which basically confused me. :palm: Sorry for my noob-ness. So how did voltron get it to work as a preamp when it's a loop out?

Must see inside pics.

Bet there are no blackgate output caps...

Or blackgate input caps...

or bipolar mascquerading as fets...

bet there is no $10 usb to audio converter either...

obvious fail :D

and its way to cheap...

and it works too...

The output is in fact a pre-amp output even though the label says Line Out. I have mentioned this to Todd and I assume that he can correct it on later rear plate orders.

The real question is whether the preamp output is buffered or not.

It could just be the output from the pot... In which case it would

be high impedance. Or the output could be directly from the input

selector switch.

I don't consider either of those 2 options a real preamp...

Is it me .... or does this amp look both ugly and cheap? The volume knob really looks funky.

But here are the pics for the time being:

Well, looks don't really have any impact on sound quality right?

Yeah, no bling... here all the $$$ goes inside!!

ps: I also like to have nicer looking stuff, but I understand Pete and Todd's thinking behind their products!

Huh, the power switch is still done opposite of what seems right. It definitely doesn't look fancy (and looks downright gritty) I think it could work. It's in a competetive price range, and if what could have gone into looks went into sound/quality, then it could be a very good option.

OK, it doesn't have style like these two, but my pictures are crappy and done at night with bad lighting. Still, the TTVJ look is definitely utilitarian and nobody seems to like the volume knob except Pete Millett because it is used on the 307A amp as well! It was just something to get posted, but the amp does not look like it was built by Accuphase or Luxman. It is similar to my EC/SS in level of looks/style, although I keep asking Todd if there is some reason the DIY guys like Nate can come up with beautiful one-off cases and face plates like the recent Beta22 for tyrion. He seems to believe it would be too expensive and obviously believes the money is better spent on internals and design.
