Duggeh Posted February 6, 2009 Report Posted February 6, 2009 I'm looking for something that adds basic control functionality to a computer IDE drive (pause, previous track etc). The front buttons are just eject and play/next track. Is there a simple solution for this?
luvdunhill Posted February 6, 2009 Report Posted February 6, 2009 something like this? eBay Motors: Universal cd-rom drive controller with remote for diyer (item 290293563954 end time Mar-04-09 06:10:19 PST) and perhaps this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Hard-disk-IDE-MP3-Controller-Board-with-LCD-Display-DIY_W0QQitemZ190283472765QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_MP3_Players?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116
Duggeh Posted February 6, 2009 Author Report Posted February 6, 2009 My searches turned up nothing like that, must be some sort of curse, muchos thankias!
luvdunhill Posted February 6, 2009 Report Posted February 6, 2009 I can only guess what you're doing, hence the recommendation of the second item which seems to have no relation to what you asked for
Duggeh Posted February 6, 2009 Author Report Posted February 6, 2009 Just toying with cobbling up a basic cd transport for when I have the urge to spin a disc. I've got one working but its not cased and lacks buttons. That first one seems exactly what I need to continue tinkering.
Mister X Posted February 7, 2009 Report Posted February 7, 2009 FS CDROM Controller - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio Will post a reply if the person that posted that "add" replies to an email.
Smeggy Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 Wow, that's a cool little controller. Cheap too.
dBel84 Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 that is just the sort of thing I have been looking for - I have this cheapo yamaha cdrom drive that actually sounds damned good but the lack of function drives me barmy ..dB
Smeggy Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 How do you go about rigging a cdrom drive to output an audio signal that can be fed to a standard audio device like a DAC? Is there some wee kit to do that too?

Hm this is interesting, I'm guessing this is the answer: Quote from FS CDROM Controller - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio Hi swistak, the format of digital output is TTL . Because all the CD-ROM only provides TTL digital signal derectlly from the rear panel. But you can translate the TTL to SPDIF easilly, just add 3 passive resistors and capacitors. I wrote the circuit in my USER MANUAL for this CD-ROM controller, send me an email if you interest /quote That kit looks particularly interesting. Seems like you only need the kit and PSU and CDrom drive and that circuit to make a transport.
Smeggy Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 Ah, that's what I get for not reading the whole thread. Yes, looks like a cool deal as I have an external DVD/CD writer drive with PSU. Add a kit and yeah, nice transport. Hmm, further thinkings.... My drive has a USB interface, is there any way to plug this into a USB DAC and expect it to do anything? I know, wishful thinking on my part
grawk Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 Nope, both are endpoints, not usb hosts.

I know, wishful thinking on my part Haha now THAT would be cool Hey can I check, that PSU is it the same as the one inside the com? This looks really interesting, cause I also have a CDrom drive and a PSU at hand. Has anyone tried this kit? I'm a bit hesistant cause I'm just getting started on electronics and it would be great to have someone to ask if I screw up This doesn't look too complicated so i'm hoping its not more than I can chew on.
Duggeh Posted February 10, 2009 Author Report Posted February 10, 2009 Most IDE drives have an SPDIF output next to the analogue out. You can just use that.
Smeggy Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 Nope, both are endpoints, not usb hosts. Yeah I know, I was just hoping that the CD was still sending something down the pipe anyway. Nobody ever designs these things to work how I want them to. Damn standards committees.
lostonetr Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 any idea which cd-rom drives it'll work with? I'm eyeing an older NEC drive that I can pick up locally, think it was used in a plinnus player that someone wrote about. Otherwise I don't recall any other reason I've have looked up a specific model #
