boomana Posted June 26, 2010 Report Posted June 26, 2010 ^ Definitely Colin's doing. As is this: Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance I actually like this. Don't know if it will ever make it to my regular listening list, but I like a lot of it. The Edge of Sanity....seems more like a joke/parody band than anything else. Really humorous, but otherwise unlistenable. Sorry, Colin.
boomana Posted June 26, 2010 Report Posted June 26, 2010 Steve Jansen - Slope Reksy's recommendation. I like.
deepak Posted June 26, 2010 Author Report Posted June 26, 2010 Vicki you might like old school Katatonia more (Dance of December Souls is my favorite by them). Slower music with a lot more atmosphere, like a slower, darker, Black Sabbath with doom vocals. New Katatonia sounds like generic nu-metal. That Edge of Sanity album is far too ADD for me, but I know Colin and xandx1 love it.
boomana Posted June 26, 2010 Report Posted June 26, 2010 (edited) Al, that's a really nice CD I forgot about. Maybe I'll listen to it now. I just can't listen to that voice. Edited June 26, 2010 by boomana

blessingx Posted June 26, 2010 Report Posted June 26, 2010 Thanks to faust3d's reminding, and a quick find on the interwebs, The Lounge Lizards' No Pain for Cakes.
boomana Posted June 26, 2010 Report Posted June 26, 2010 I'm slowly making my way through all the suggestions folks gave me. This one, from Dusty, I quite like and picked up this afternoon from Barnes and Noble.
Voltron Posted June 26, 2010 Report Posted June 26, 2010 For Calexico, I also really like Feast of Wire, In The Reins (with Iron and Wine) and Garden Ruin.
boomana Posted June 26, 2010 Report Posted June 26, 2010 I've heard In the Reins before, but never really paid attention. I'll check the others out.
Dusty Chalk Posted June 27, 2010 Report Posted June 27, 2010 Thanks for reporting back, Vicki -- it's always nice to know whether or not one's suggestions work out or not, even if you don't end up liking them, it's still helpful in the future.

elnero Posted June 27, 2010 Report Posted June 27, 2010 For Calexico, I also really like Feast of Wire, In The Reins (with Iron and Wine) and Garden Ruin. In The Reins is one of my favorite albums but then I'm a really big Iron & Wine fan so that's not surprising, based off that album I tried some Calexico awhile back but didn't get into it for some reason, I'll have to give your suggestions a try and see if that changes.
mypasswordis Posted June 27, 2010 Report Posted June 27, 2010 Good. Will check out Bruch stuffs. Was nearly beaten to death by overexposure to Bruch's first violin concerto as a kid.
mypasswordis Posted June 27, 2010 Report Posted June 27, 2010 I actually had to remind myself what the second one sounded like, and the one video that's on youtube is one of the most horrendous things ever. If the second one is a collection of scales, what's the first? A collection of arpeggios?
mypasswordis Posted June 27, 2010 Report Posted June 27, 2010 ... yeah, it's true. Found a recording of Menuhin playing the second. Ah, much better.
