Voltron Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 I've never figured out a way to like PJ. If I were to try again, what should I listen to?
Torpedo Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 No idea Al, this is the first PJ album I'm listening to in my life. I'm kind of surprised since I was expecting something more like Joanna Newsom or Regina, but is more like Chrissie Hynde on premenstrual anger, but without any commercial concessions ala Alanis. According to AMG this is the album to start with Let's see what her fans have to say
Voltron Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 Good to hear you have about the same reaction as I do. Signed by the artist.
Voltron Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 Belle and Sebastian -- Write about Love
aardvark baguette Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 Tim Chester NME - Nine Inch Nails - 'Pretty Hate Machine' re-issue - SoundCloud
Dusty Chalk Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 Have you heard the demos?I've never figured out a way to like PJ. If I were to try again, what should I listen to?Either Is This Desire? or Dry, depending on whether or not you want mature, or raw, respectively. MHO.
mypasswordis Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 Signed by the artist. Cool, he's good friends with my teacher (I think I've said this already). The only CDs I have signed by the artist are two of Hilary Hahn's.
jinp6301 Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 Girl Talk - All Day I think its the best thing he's done so far.
Torpedo Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 Either Is This Desire? or Dry, depending on whether or not you want mature, or raw, respectively. MHO. Thanks for the suggestions Dusty. Despite her very aggressive style, there's something in her music -at least yesterday night under the influence of some ethanol- which I found interesting enough for more investigation. We'll see. I've listened to some Beatles and Elvis Presley now starting this: Huey Lewis and the News - Fore! A nostalgia exercise. It's cloudy, rainy and cold here...
en480c4 Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 I think PJ's most accessible and strongest is Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea. The best balance to my ears.
Torpedo Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 Thanks Ian, will try later. Listened to Dry. Still aggressive in a different way than Ani DiFranco, but interesting, still not sure why. I'm not specially fond of raged music.
Voltron Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 Thanks Dusty and Ian for the PJ suggestions. Miles Davis -- Bitches Brew 40th Anniversary So far, I have listened to the original album and now the Tanglewood concert on CD. Awesome, and I have yet to play the vinyl version, which is really where it's at.
luvdunhill Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 Mahler 2 - Bernstein NY Philharmonic Probably worth finding this on vinyl, a nice recording it is.
mypasswordis Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 I am a fan of Mahler 2, and sometimes enjoy Bernstein. Actually don't think I've heard his Mahler 2, though I may have just forgot. Will check out. Just got back from a lesson that wasn't terrible but could have gone a lot better. Gonna go practice a few hours to make up for it.
Dusty Chalk Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 Yello by Yello, The Anthology -- resuming this. I think I may have to jack these guys up to my Top X Favorite Artists list.
Torpedo Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 Listened to PJ Harvey's "is this desire?" and "Stories from the City Stories from the Sea". Found both more accessible, at times more like Patti Smith. PJ is interesting nonetheless, will have to pay more listens. Now listening to Baby Huey - The Baby Huey Story
Dusty Chalk Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 The live video is pretty watchable, too.

skullguise Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 It's an 80's one-hit wonder day....one of my favorite bands, Wall of Voodoo The Index Masters (includes a great version of "Ring of Fire") And Call of the West (with "Mexican Radio")
Dusty Chalk Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 I <3 Wall of Voodoo. So so many great songs. If you don't have Dark Continent, you must track it down. Now I've got a medley of songs stuck in my head: Lost Weekend/Call of the West/Animal Day/Back in Flesh/...a bunch of others.
