morphsci Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 I'm still bitter that the market wasn't there for SXRD rear-projection. I have the last set Sony made before pulling the plug on that segment, and it's an absolute gem. I'll cry tears of blood when it dies and I have to replace it with a flat panel. Yep that's what our 60" is. The SXRD technology is really great and the picture is stunning when you get it calibrated. I'm not too worried about replacing it as that will (hopefully) be a few years down the line and video technology seems to be going at a pretty good clip now. Now for the obligatory "lasers" image:
postjack Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 The best Black Friday deal I've seen for a plasma is a 50" Samsung at wal-mart for $800: Wal-Mart's Black Friday deals - Nov. 14, 2008 course its just speculation right now.
Hopstretch Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 The best Black Friday deal I've seen for a plasma is a 50" Samsung at wal-mart for $800 Just say no to 768p.
postjack Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 Just say no to 768p. its not 1080p?
deepak Posted November 23, 2008 Author Report Posted November 23, 2008 its not 1080p? According to BFads.net it's 720p. They'd be almost giving it away if it was 1080p.
postjack Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 lame at the 720p. what do y'all think of the insignia sets? iirc there is a 47" 1080p for $1000.

Now for the obligatory "lasers" image: Ditto, I have the 60" Sony KDS-60A3000, and I am just floored by the picture. Calibrated it myself with a meter and some software. Hopefully by the time this set tanks, the LCDs (or whaterver) will exceed what this set can do.
Hopstretch Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 Whee! A3000 fanboys unite! Incredible set. My kids fingerpainted on mine with milk the other day. There was some yelling.
Dusty Chalk Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 Yeah, it's probably the 50a450 they're selling at $800 -- if it's any of the 1080p sets, they're beating the best price I've ever seen for it by hundreds of dollars (I think the lowest I've seen is $1300 for a refurb). As evil as I think of Wal-Mart, even I would shop there at that price.
Eric5676 Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 If you have to shop online, Amazon is doing a really good job these days on price and overall service.
Old Pa Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 I've been enjoying a 46" Sharp for the last year after getting it with free shipping last December. Viewing distance is about ten feet. Liked it so much, I got SWMBO a 32" for her office. Should be some good deals out there after Friday. Still mostly nothing worth watching on cable and Comcast digital is a bad joke.
zippy2001 Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 I just bought a 46" Sharp Aquos from Costco for $999. With the high def channels, it looks great. It's a 1080p LCD. Now all I need is a PS3 so I can watch BluRay movies and play games in High Def.
Icarium Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 I think I have successfully navigated through Samsung's not 1 or 2 but like 6 52" 1080p 120Hz 50000:1 contrast ratio tvs to select the LN52A650. If anyone has any reasons which I should go with a different model let me know.. otherwise I'm just waiting for the right price.

If anyone has any reasons which I should go with a different model let me know.. otherwise I'm just waiting for the right price. I'm going for the LN40A650 (40" is the largest that will fit) so I think that you've made a good choice. If you want LED backlighting and don't mind spending big bucks, you could go for the LN55A950.
Dusty Chalk Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 I prefer Sharps by a small margin -- Samsung is probably second on the LCD front. I also really like their "touch of color", which Sharps don't have. Have you considered DLPs at all? When you go massive (I.E. greater than 50"), that's about the only other thing I'd take into consideration.
Icarium Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Well I want to wall mount so DLPs dont seem to really allow for that.
deepak Posted November 24, 2008 Author Report Posted November 24, 2008 Yeah we had a DLP at our old place, it was enormous. Plus replacing bulbs...no thanks.
Dusty Chalk Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 Well I want to wall mount...Oh, yeah, well, forget it, then.
Icarium Posted December 1, 2008 Report Posted December 1, 2008 Now that I've picked a model and am reasonably sure I am buying from Amazon.com... anyone got a wallmount brand/model to recommend? I need something that can comfortably support 52".
Hopstretch Posted December 1, 2008 Report Posted December 1, 2008 Chief and Sanus are two reliable brands that are widely available online. You shouldn't have to spend much more than $120. Try TigerDirect.
Dusty Chalk Posted December 1, 2008 Report Posted December 1, 2008 I went and checked out some of the Panasonic Plasmas at MicroCenter briefly today -- and they're not that bad. I'd consider them. Plus, I believe they make a 1080p model which is less than 50"...which is the smallest the Samsung makes. That's a lot of TV -- possibly too much for me. I'm tempted to go 46" or maybe even 42".
Icarium Posted December 1, 2008 Report Posted December 1, 2008 Yeah my brother has a panasonic plasma 42" looks quite nice.. but I really want to do LCD personally.
