jp11801 Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 Just watched ep 1 after listening to the audible book up to about this point and while the HBO version is great it pales in comparision to the book. The visuals are grand but it lacks the detail that the book brings out that makes the story up to this point great.
deepak Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 First episode owned so much. Boromir FTW!! Hopefully HBO will do the other books as well.
MoonShine Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 For you guys listening on audiobook: What do you think of the narrator? Most people evidently like him but I am not a fan of Roy Dotrice. I am looking forward to the 4th book which is narrated by one of my favorites: John Lee.
Voltron Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 The second ep was really good, and not just because the douchey little prince uses my trademark catch phrase (albeit in a way I myself would not use it). Shattered dreams everywhere, more sex, and direwolves ftmfw!
NightWoundsTime Posted April 26, 2011 Report Posted April 26, 2011 (edited) Sorry Al, just watched the episode and the catch phrase isn't coming to me. Edit: Was it "My princess can drink as much as she wants"? That's just wrong Al. Edit again: Duh, just realized it. Forgot the word was even in there. Agreed that the credits are awesome. And I too exclaimed "Boromir!". Downloading the book but jesus, 33 hours? I suppose I'll be listening in the truck. Edited April 26, 2011 by NightWoundsTime
deepak Posted April 26, 2011 Report Posted April 26, 2011 I just can't get into audiobooks. Reading with my own voice allows me to paint a better image in my head, even though some of the narrators I've heard were pretty good. Personally didn't care for all the drama involving children in this episode.
tyrion Posted April 26, 2011 Report Posted April 26, 2011 You may want to stop watching, there is a lot of drama with the children.
deepak Posted April 26, 2011 Report Posted April 26, 2011 It was really a minor complaint, and I understand it's necessary given the bloodlines. It was still a good episode, but I don't mind character introductory episodes if done well like the first.
jp11801 Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 I really liked the second episode there were several key elements missing that were great from the book. Mike suggested that listen to the book then check out the HBO mini series. Right now I'm listening to right about where the episode should end then watching. While it's great to see the visual representation directly after reading it is distracting when things need to be cut or combined for the screen. The book really is magnificent and I'm liking the audible the reader to me has done a great job.
NightWoundsTime Posted May 2, 2011 Report Posted May 2, 2011 Mike, what's the word on how far HBO is going to go with this series? Seems like this could go a while. What kind of time frame will the book series cover? Also interesting comparing it to The Borgias. Very similar tone, themes, and images. I think they both have their strengths, but will concede that Thrones has less flaws.
falkon Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 It's renewed for its 2nd season. Each season will cover a book. HBO is usually good about keeping good series running regardless of rating.
tyrion Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 That's great that it's been renewed. I was not aware of that. I think this season is 10 episodes. I am really enjoying it but I am happy I read the books. As Jp pointed out, there is so much missing from the series. I would encourage anyone that has not read the books to start. You will not regret it.
laxx Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 I picked up the 4 books that are out now and started reading last night. Loving it so far even though I'm just filling in the gaps of the episodes I've watched.
tyrion Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 I suspect you will have the first one done long before the series is over.
NightWoundsTime Posted May 5, 2011 Report Posted May 5, 2011 Yeah I'm giving up and going in for the real book. This reader just can't keep me interested. However if I ever find myself unable to sleep...
laxx Posted May 6, 2011 Report Posted May 6, 2011 Book is awesome so far. It's Friday and all I want to do is go home after work to read!
morphsci Posted May 6, 2011 Report Posted May 6, 2011 Watched the first three episodes over the last two days. HBOgo + iPad FTW.
deepak Posted May 6, 2011 Report Posted May 6, 2011 Ordered an early edition of the books off Ebay. I hate when publishers turn the book designs into photographs of the TV/movie characters when a book adaptation gets big on film.
NightWoundsTime Posted May 8, 2011 Report Posted May 8, 2011 Heh. My LOTR trilogy is an ancient document from the 70's, having been read many times over by each member of my family. I couldn't imagine reading it any other way now. Maybe I'll hit the whole set again soon and then make sure it gets passed to my sister.
Voltron Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 Ep 4 was really good, although the "winter is coming" refrain is getting old. Bring it on already! So far, every other episode is good or perhaps just the even numbered episodes are good.
grawk Posted May 23, 2011 Report Posted May 23, 2011 Sarah Connor is quite the bitch. I liked her better when she was trying to save the world.
MoonShine Posted May 23, 2011 Report Posted May 23, 2011 Were Loras and Renly gay in the books? I don't remember that being the case.
deepak Posted May 23, 2011 Report Posted May 23, 2011 Sarah Connor is quite the bitch. I liked her better when she was trying to save the world. She was greatly missed in Terminator 3
