kevin gilmore
OK, so every year about this time, i decide to do something silly and over the top. Last year was the titanium hammer. I need ideas for this year. Has to involve computer controlled machine tools. Has to involve expensive raw materials... Obviously it has to be practically useless. Knuckledragger
Weren't you going to make a uranium volume knob? That'd be pretty insane, but not terribly useful.

kevin gilmore
Weren't you going to make a uranium volume knob? That'd be pretty insane, but not terribly useful. One of the people in the machine shop was not amused at last years thing. So no hazardous materials. Nothing radioactive, no beryllium copper, no asbestos... No loud screeching noises attempting to machine damascus... And yes the hammer did take quite a while to machine. justin came up with the idea of a magnetic levitation table for the BHSE... deepak
A "naked" clock, where you can see all the little bits at work. Though it probably involves a ridiculous amount of work for one that looks cool. That's just my inner horologist dreaming
aardvark baguette
Im all thumbs, but I made a Plexiglas eyeball clock with bloodshot capillaries for minute hands, back in high school shop. Dreadhead
bungie based suspension is just as good though not as cool and I'd have to wonder if those fields aren't big enough to deflect the paths of your electrons in the tubes. The child picked one up and when he approached the other magnet on a nearby table, it became airborne and obliterated his small hand." kevin gilmore
This bowling ball thing got into my head last night. So i could machine it out of a solid piece of titanium, but i did titanium last year. A solid piece of african ebony might be really nice. The titanium is most likely out of the price range for a joke, and the chunk of ebony might be unobtainable at any price. I figure i need 1 cubic foot. maybe some kind of glowing orb... edit: bowling ball made out of titanium would be about 200 lbs and my price is $78 per lb can't be...
