riceboy Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 I liked Paul Newman as an actor, but most for his generosity when giving from his food business. It was estimated that his food business generated close to 90 million or possibly more for various charities and causes. He will be dearly missed.
Aura Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 CNBC ticker was reporting in the area of $250 million gross to charity, but I've no idea how accurate that may be. Sad to see him go, I wish I would've been more familiar with his work as an actor.
blessingx Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 Easy enough to catch up on his career. Was just in a discussion of The Hustler yesterday. A good place to start. Is sad. Marpessa Dawn passed away also.
diebenkorn Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 Not to hijack but just found out a couple of days ago David Foster Wallace hung himself. That one hit me like a ton of bricks, a very sad day.
swt61 Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 Paul Newman was one of the greatest actors of his day. Where he really blazed a trail was being a no nonsense philanthropist. The fame never went to his head. There was a great Iconoclast episode recently with Robert Redford discussing Paul's life. The interview with the two of them is very worth seeing. "Diggin' the hole boss."
jp11801 Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 I was really saddened to see this, many of his performances are among my favorites.
Pars Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 Agreed. Paul Newman was also one of my favorite older actors, and a real role model in terms of how to deal with fame/Hollywood in your personal life. I was sad to hear this. My condolences to his family; RIP Paul.
deepak Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 Agreed he was a fantastic actor, and I'm guilty of purchasing a few tins of Newman's marinara sauce myself He will be remembered.
Absorbine_Sr Posted September 29, 2008 Report Posted September 29, 2008 And beyond acting, he was also one hell of a race car driver. He didn't even take up the sport professionally until he was 47, and placed second in the 24 Hours of Daytona when he was well into his 70's. An amazing all around human being who will be missed.
