DigiPete Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 I'm definitely a job. I might have found a Seduction for us to compare against. Posty has one. Jack, are you coming to CanJam LA? If so, can we convince you to bring it? Please? Go Posty!!! I'll offer up my home for some listening fun
luvdunhill Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 I'd pit the Pearl against the Seduction any day and expect the Pearl to win hands down. Since I have Jack's other phono stage in for mods, he may be reluctant to lone the Seduction out As for parts and what not for the Pearl, I can get you PCBs but you have to pay for shipping from Germany. The lowest kit in the group buy was $337.04, but that of course took advantage of a lot of consolidated shipping and what not.
deepak Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 I prefer tube phono-stages. The comparisons we did with high end tube phonos with built in SUTs (not sure if the EAR uses S&B or custom order?) and solid state, the tubed ended up sounding better. I'm willing to give the Pearl a shot

I'm a real fan of Bottlehead products and have never heard the Seduction. As far as Jack being willing, I'm hoping he's coming next spring (or whenever) to the International meet and that he'll bring the Seduction with him. If you are not done with his mods by then, we're likely to start calling you "Mikhail".
DigiPete Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 If you are not done with his mods by then, we're likely to start calling you "Mikhail". oooouuuuu.... that hurts!
luvdunhill Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 yeah, especially when Posty made the mistake of not agreeing to an upfront price... I'll just take my time and offer him some more mods to placate him, that's the plan at least... maybe offer to make another Bugle to someone else and then sell Postys off to the new person... you know the drill.
deepak Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 And then refund him with five bounced e-checks (too soon, too soon? Sorry posty )
Salt Peanuts Posted November 14, 2008 Author Report Posted November 14, 2008 Bumping my old thread but now I'm seriously considering AES AE-3 MkII. We shall see.
Sherwood Posted November 14, 2008 Report Posted November 14, 2008 I'm in a similar boat here, though naturally I want everything. The BAT was the only truly balanced preamp I've found, but the Parasound Halo P3 and the Classe DR-5 often come up for as low as $500 -- both are balanced.
Salt Peanuts Posted November 14, 2008 Author Report Posted November 14, 2008 Well, balanced isn't needed anymore now that I don't have a source with balanced output anymore (and I would've had to get a power amp with balanced input to take advantage of it anyways). Unfortunately, used AES AE3-MkII I was looking at had already been sold so I'm back to searching, though there are others I have my eyes on.
postjack Posted November 14, 2008 Report Posted November 14, 2008 I don't know how I missed y'all talking about me back in September, I must not have been keeping up with this thread. I would be happy to do a loaner on the Seduction, its just sitting cold right now while the Bugle gets all the love. I'm not planning on selling it because it is a great phono and I'd like to use it trying out MM carts in the future, but for the time being we could send it on a cross-country vacation. For the record I also TENTATIVELY plan to attend Canjam 09.
Dusty Chalk Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 (edited) MF A3.2, definitely. Or spring the extra 750 or so and get the A308. Whichever one you get, though, make sure it comes with the remote. I wonder how much the A1 FBP goes for? Or you could look around for the last X-PRE (v8?). Edited November 15, 2008 by Dusty Chalk
Salt Peanuts Posted November 16, 2008 Author Report Posted November 16, 2008 Well, I'm going with ModWright SWL 9.0SE. Hopefully, it'll arrive next week.
tkam Posted November 16, 2008 Report Posted November 16, 2008 Good call I love my Modwright SWL 9.0SE
postjack Posted November 16, 2008 Report Posted November 16, 2008 do any of the modwright preamps come with a built in phono?
Salt Peanuts Posted November 16, 2008 Author Report Posted November 16, 2008 Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it. It won't have a tube-rectified PS like yours, though. That model was bit out of my reach.
tkam Posted November 16, 2008 Report Posted November 16, 2008 Posty, the SWLP 9.0SE is the SWL 9.0SE w/ phono stage
Salt Peanuts Posted November 16, 2008 Author Report Posted November 16, 2008 do any of the modwright preamps come with a built in phono? Yep - SWLP 9.0SE. $4500 or $5000 with tube rectified PS. EDIT - Dang, Todd beat me to it!
postjack Posted November 16, 2008 Report Posted November 16, 2008 Posty, the SWLP 9.0SE is the SWL 9.0SE w/ phono stage cool. pricey, but good to know. adjustable loading too. but it sounds sweet.
Salt Peanuts Posted November 16, 2008 Author Report Posted November 16, 2008 cool. pricey, but good to know. adjustable loading too. but it sounds sweet. Just find one used. That's what I did with the preamp.
postjack Posted November 16, 2008 Report Posted November 16, 2008 *bet* it sounds sweet. damn iPhone keyboard.
Salt Peanuts Posted November 16, 2008 Author Report Posted November 16, 2008 Todd, have you tried different 5687's in your preamp? I'm curious how sensitive (or not) the unit is to tube rolling.
zer010gic Posted May 11, 2009 Report Posted May 11, 2009 I would also look at the Rogue Products like the Perseus used. I saw one on audiogon a week back for $975. Corey
