Spiug31 Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 CERN announces start-up date for Large Hadron Collider - 07:30 CET (08:30 BST) I heard a trailer for BBC Radio4`s "Big Bang Day" themed around switch-on of the LHC and it got me thinking BBC - Radio 4 - Big Bang Day The CERN home page also has link to a live webcast for the occasion. CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research Live webcast of switch-on what the LHC is : Large Hadron Collider - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Quote
bperboy Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 Day before my birthday... hopefully it doesn't create some super black hole and suck the earth into itself... that'd suck for a b-day present.. Quote
bperboy Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 i would consider myself honored to have the day before my birthday be the day the earth is destroyed, personally. Well, at least it would be memorable... too bad no one would be around to remember it In all actuality, the LHC is a fascinating scientific advancement, and I'd be interested to see if there are any major breakthroughs in our understanding of the universe. Of course, I probably wouldn't understand any of it Quote
Beefy Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 Elemental physics like they will be doing at LHC always bakes my brain. I'm kind of hoping Jesus falls out of a smashed proton, then gets sucked into a black hole, just to really confuse researchers and theists alike. Quote

EDIT: That just made it on my favorite quotes page on facebook. Quote
Beefy Posted September 8, 2008 Report Posted September 8, 2008 CERN's LHC 'First Beam' to be broadcast live on Wednesday Quote
Hopstretch Posted September 8, 2008 Report Posted September 8, 2008 It's (particle) clobberin' time! Quote
Spiug31 Posted September 8, 2008 Author Report Posted September 8, 2008 Here is a pdf of interest with timings for the day http://lhc-first-beam.web.cern.ch/lhc-first-beam/documents/CERN_LHC_first_beam_day.pdf it's the broadcast itinerary with all the relevant times (in CET). Apparently CET (Central European summer time) = UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) + 2 hours it makes my brain hurt working out local timings so check the pdf and make your own assumptions as to what time it's all at. (going to lie down ) Quote
catscratch Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 Damnit, the world is still here. That means I have to go back to work and fix this stupid PC. Man, and I had high hopes... Quote
Spiug31 Posted September 10, 2008 Author Report Posted September 10, 2008 On the bright side, it may end in 4 weeks time when they do the first collisions Quote
