postjack Posted August 17, 2008 Report Posted August 17, 2008 Anyone heard it or heard anything about it? MUSIC HALL/SHANLING CD-T200A TUBE SACD PLAYER - elusivedisc They run ~$1500 range used on Audiogon. Nice looking unit when it has the silver posts instead of the gold. Two of the tubes power the output, the other two tubes power a headphone amplifier (output on side of unit). It also has preamp functionality (onboard volume). Shanling = Music Hall, which is a good thing I guess. I've never heard Music Hall stuff but I've heard good things.
postjack Posted August 17, 2008 Author Report Posted August 17, 2008 it's my understanding (with the original non-A versions, at least), that while they are a good base for mods, and and can be made to be very good, they aren't all that special stock, for the money. might be wrong... Right on, thanks for your response. There is some competition in that price range used, namely the Krell SACD Standard. Problem with the Krell is that the reviews are all over the place, probably more so then any source I've ever researched. And of course we can't have a mid-fi SACD player without tons of transport issues, can we.
Dusty Chalk Posted August 17, 2008 Report Posted August 17, 2008 I think it looks hot, in a spectacular sci-fi chick wearing a foil cape as an extra on Dr. Who kind of way. I haven't heard any reviews that said sound alone makes it worth the price without modding and/or tuberolling. But I still intend to get one when I win the lottery -- I think it will go with my O'Heocha D2 speakers.

Shanling became known only due to its unconventional looks and the fact they were one of the first interesting Chi-Fi audio gear. These days, there are lots of choices from overseas, many better IMO. All the Shalings I've heard including T100, 200, and even T300 were very average sounding, nothing special. The T200A SACD sports just op-amp I/V stage, followed by op-amp output stage, followed by superfluous tube "buffer" stage to muck up the sound. You can pick up this configuration for around $300 from other Chi-Fi companies.
