thrice Posted August 15, 2008 Report Posted August 15, 2008 Ok, so a few of us have found this sweet program that allows you to share music over the intertubes: Simplify Media - Connect Your Music If you're interested, download the program and PM me for my screen name. Right now, a few of us are using it successfully. It rocks!
thrice Posted August 15, 2008 Author Report Posted August 15, 2008 Well, it's been a bit buggy for me.... it was fun for awhile....we'll see if it comes back up again. I can't seem to get it to work now, although it could be my work connection is blocking it.
aardvark baguette Posted August 15, 2008 Report Posted August 15, 2008 I noticed the site mentioned if your work redirects web though a proxy server, that they dont support that, currently.
thrice Posted August 15, 2008 Author Report Posted August 15, 2008 Yeah, I saw that too, but it was working for a little while. I was connected to two other users and streaming music from them. I could also access my home computer. Perhaps there are larger issues here. You do need to create an account, so perhaps they have some sort of server that is seeing heavy traffic right now.
Hopstretch Posted August 15, 2008 Report Posted August 15, 2008 I've been using it for a while and it's definitely taking a hit right now. Likely because their iPhone client just went live in the App Store and they're adding a metric shit ton of new users.
tkam Posted August 15, 2008 Report Posted August 15, 2008 Yeah their blog talks about the iPhone client coming out yesterday and with them offering the first 100,000 downloads as freebies I'm sure they are getting hammered.
thrice Posted August 15, 2008 Author Report Posted August 15, 2008 That must be it. Hopefully it will iron itself out over the next few days. When it was working it was impressive to say the least.
thrice Posted August 15, 2008 Author Report Posted August 15, 2008 looks like we might be back up and running.
aardvark baguette Posted August 16, 2008 Report Posted August 16, 2008 I've downloaded it to one computer. Currently re-importing at least part of my library into iTunes. (We're gonna be here a while, lol).
Bigguy Posted August 16, 2008 Report Posted August 16, 2008 Added my collection to the collective Borg.
aardvark baguette Posted August 16, 2008 Report Posted August 16, 2008 Looks like it works. I was able to load a small portion of my library (~12,900 songs) into iTunes. It looks like Cover Flow is disabled, but I guess thats a small price to pay for such a cool program. I wont be able to take advantage of it at work (streaming isnt allowed) but it will serve a nice purpose in my home.
thrice Posted August 16, 2008 Author Report Posted August 16, 2008 Well, I'm connected to grawk, tyrion, bigguy, and grandenigma. This app rocks. Spent the morning browsing other libraries....this may be worse on my wallet than the WAYLTN thread.
aardvark baguette Posted August 16, 2008 Report Posted August 16, 2008 Stupid question time: can you download music from john-doe's shared folder to your own hard drive? If so, I should think the RIAA would be all over this.
thrice Posted August 16, 2008 Author Report Posted August 16, 2008 not that I'm aware of, I think it's just a streaming app, no downloading.
thrice Posted August 16, 2008 Author Report Posted August 16, 2008 There is an app called Mojo that has similar functionality and let's you download your friend's music as well. I haven't used it though. It does not have an iPhone/iPod Touch client though.
tyrion Posted August 16, 2008 Report Posted August 16, 2008 Feel free to pm me as well if you want to share libraries.
Hopstretch Posted August 16, 2008 Report Posted August 16, 2008 Ditto. My user name is the same there and here. I do have an embarrassing amount of low bit rate music, I'm afraid, as I was late to see the light.

Hopstretch Posted August 16, 2008 Report Posted August 16, 2008 Time to re-rip. Getting there. It's mostly a case of re-purchasing, unfortunately.
tyrion Posted August 16, 2008 Report Posted August 16, 2008 Getting there. It's mostly a case of re-purchasing, unfortunately. Alright, I don't want to be a bit rate snob so I will send an invite.
Hopstretch Posted August 16, 2008 Report Posted August 16, 2008 I'm not worthy! Conveniently, all that is lossless is in a smart playlist called ... "Lossless". Incidentally, anyone know what the bit rate of the stream is?

Hopstretch Posted August 16, 2008 Report Posted August 16, 2008 PS: Looks like the bit rate of the stream is 160k, so your highfalutin' bit-perfect music horde is largely moot in this application. Yah boo sucks to you with knobs on. Oh, and thanks. I like a bit of Aimee Mann I do.
