The Monkey Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 does anyone have experience with the Nikon 70-200 2.8 vr1 or 2? Is it worth it? Also considering the 80-200 2.8 w/o VR. Also, need a wide angle but don't want to break the bank. Any thoughts? The 18-200 VRII is nice, but slow. Want to move to better glass but it's so expensive...
crappyjones123 Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 have you considered manual focusing? could go fast and wide and get very good iq.
Cankin Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 is the fastest wide angle for crop sensor camera, it got many great reviews too. My friend uses that and 70-200 2.8 VRII for his paid job.
Salt Peanuts Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 (edited) I handled a Canon 70-200/2.8 II couple of years back and one thing I remember is that it was rather heavy - and Nikon one weighs about the same (~3.3 pounds or so), which is to say it weight 2 pounds more than a 18-200. Methinks you should get yourself down to B&H and try it out. I personally wouldn't want to handle that much weight, but I've got tendinosis. Also, from what I read, Nikon 70-200 VR2 is actually bit shorter than 200mm and gets shorter as you focus closer. As for Tokina, aren't they going out with an updated version of 11-16 soon? The Monkey Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 I wish the 70-200 could take a teleconverter.

Dreadhead Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 I use my 70-200 with a 2x teleconverter and it works great.
The Monkey Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 Thanks guys. I am teh stupid. I read the compatibility chart wrong. But jesus this stuff ain't cheap.
VPI Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 That is why you make big city lawyer money. If you want to borrow the 70-200 mkII for a bit let me know.
The Monkey Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 I may just do that Jeff. Coulda used it today for the shuttle.
VPI Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 Looks great, and it has my first Jersey home in the background. Lived on the 29th Floor of that red building.
Salt Peanuts Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 And Dinny, while you are at it, pick up yourself a D700 or D800. Btw, anyone looking for a 105dc?
Iron_Dreamer Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 D800 landed Monday, in a box that UPS did their best to utterly destroy. The camera seems to run fine though. With the new business, I haven't had the time to do anything resembling really trying the camera out yet. It has a noticeably quieter shutter than the D800, and the new screen is definitely quite nice as well. If anybody would be interested in my D700/grip/l-plate, let me know.
The Monkey Posted June 7, 2012 Report Posted June 7, 2012 14-24 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 mkII. Buy them. Rented both for the weekend.
