agile_one
Nice, Mikey, and Grahame beat me to the "Bambi for dinner" line. What did you use to catch them?
The Monkey
Hey wise ones, I have my eye on the Nikon 18-200 VR lens. The VR1 is significantly less expensive than the VR2 and I'm wondering if there are many, or any, significant differences. I saw some brief mentions that there is less lens creep on the new one, but that the VR is the same. Anyone got any wisdom for me?
The Monkey
Thanks guys. I love my 35mm fixed, but with a kid, the zoom can be helpful. I like Nate's idea of a second hand 18-200. Following up on this, for a kids baseball game, I find the zoom to 200 (300 would be even better) very very useful. If only I could afford a fast one. grawk
I did fine with a 5.6 28-300 for my kids' sports outdoors. The length (plus the crop factor) got me a ton of shots that I couldn't have gotten otherwise.
Salt Peanuts
Dinny, optics and VR on new and old Nikon 18-200 are exactly the same. The new one, as you mentioned, is supposed to have less zoom creep as well as nicer action on its zoom ring. It also has a zoom locking tab to keep it at 18mm. shellylh
Dinny, I don't know anything about the VR but like my 18-200 VRII. I pretty much just carry around the 18-200 VRII and/or 35 f/1.8 (for low light or better bokeh). If you are running around with kids, you are probably not going to be changing lenses much and the 18-200 is great for that. Of course, I would love to have a 70-200 f/2.8 but that is too much $$$ for my photo skillz. Edited May 7, 2012 by shellylh
roadtonowhere08
I have a D300, and I use the 18-200VR MK1 99% of the time. I also have the 50 f/1.8, but with kids, I have to have the zoom for the candid shots. And with the VR in the 18-200, I can shoot with no flash at 1/8 sec. handheld and still get sharp shots. 1/8 sec is probably not anything special for some of you, but I am not a pro by any means, so I am very happy with mine. To me, it's the absolute perfect vacation lens.

The Monkey
Gang, what do you think of this deal: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/800855691-USE/Nikon_2159_AF_Zoom_Nikkor_18_200mm.html/3.5-5.6G+ED+AFS+VR+LENS

shellylh
I personally would feel more comfortable buying from B&H used than someone on ebay. (Can you take it back if it isn't in the condition it says it is in? They seem to have a 90 day warranty for used items.) It doesn't say it is missing the front and read caps, just the hood. The hood should be easy to replace. If it is on the camera all the time, you don't really need the bag. Looking at those used prices, I realize what a good deal I got on my (new) D90 and 18-200 Vrii combo at the time ($1289 shipped for both after $250 off). VPI
That price seems kind of high. I see the VRII going for 550-600 on Fred Miranda quite often with all accessories and a far better VR.
agile_one
Dinny ... If you end up getting from b&h, and are needing a hood, I think there's one in my closet. Will check when I get home on Sat.

This. Thanks Jeff. I did exactly that and just picked one up for $575. Let's just hope I receive it.
MexicanDragon
Congrats, Dinni! Well... all the buttons on my 20D quit working this weekend, except the shutter button. So now, I'm stuck in Cloudy (white balance) and ISO 100, and I can't review any pix. Sigh. I'm wondering if it's worth trying to get fixed, or if it's new (used) camera time. **BRENT**
Salt Peanuts
^ I vote for new a camera, as I doubt it would be cheap/worthwhile (or quick) to get a 20D fixed at this point considering it's been discontinued for over seven years. Assuming you're staying with Canon, remember to take a look at Canon Loyalty program.
nikongod
Have you tried turning it off and on again? Seriously: Sorry to hear. Maybe it can be fixed with a magic button sequence or something? I dont know if this will help: http://www.modelmayhem.com/po.php?thread_id=140081
VPI
It seems like completely turning it off and removing the internal memory battery is often the recommended fix when a Canon goes nuts. Have you tried a complete reset like that?
falkon
Jeff.. you've gotta have gotten the NEX-7 by now... Don't keep us in suspense..
