Asr Posted July 27, 2011 Report Posted July 27, 2011 (edited) Can someone shed a light to me on how to achieve a sky like his photo? Is it PP or through use of certain filters? Thanks The comments on those pics include the image settings - long exposures on most of them (upwards of several minutes), which causes the massive cloud streaking. And the use of a 10-stop ND filter, to help compensate. Of course it also goes without saying to use the smallest aperture possible and lowest ISO as well. This is a good explanation of ND filters btw: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutral_density_filter Edited July 27, 2011 by Asr
Cankin Posted July 27, 2011 Report Posted July 27, 2011 Joel mentioned he also uses Wacom tablet for accurate dodging and burning
Jon L Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 Microsoft finally released RAW codec for Windows 7 so you can view them in windows explorer, Microsoft photo gallery, etc! http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=26829
Voltron Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 That first shot is great Jeff It looks like a cloud monster rising up from behind the mountains.
crappyjones123 Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 "but what happens when ab does NOT equal 1???"
VPI Posted July 29, 2011 Report Posted July 29, 2011 (edited) That first shot is great Jeff It looks like a cloud monster rising up from behind the mountains. Thanks Al, we certainly do not have skies like this in NY. Last batch, focusing primarily on animals I ran across and the clouds. Edited July 29, 2011 by VPI
Asr Posted July 29, 2011 Report Posted July 29, 2011 Looks like you stopped in Rocky Mtn Nat'l Park there Jeff. I go up there pretty frequently because it's so close from where I live (about 30 mins away), always a great area to watch deer & elk especially. Don't usually see bighorn but I see you got lucky there. If you come back for RMAF in October, that should be a great time to catch mating season when the male elk do their bugle calls (and when the aspen trees turn gold - though the weekend of RMAF, the aspens might be closer to deep orange or red). On another note, finally got around to parsing down my set of non-Taste-festival pics from my June trip to Chicago: #1-#3: Millennium & Grant Parks (I was actually looking forward to a heavy storm there at first but ended up disappointed) #4-#5: Field Museum displays (Nikon F4 in #4) #6-#7: Chicago Line architectural boat tour through the river, and Lakeshore Tower (#7) #8: N-facing view from Willis Tower #9-#11: from Shedd Aquarium #12: one of my last pics on the trip, from just outside Shedd Aquarium
crappyjones123 Posted July 29, 2011 Report Posted July 29, 2011 randoms from yesterday and this morning.
Dusty Chalk Posted July 30, 2011 Report Posted July 30, 2011 So I friended/liked this place because he's a local beer store that has an excellent selection and is open 'til midnight, but goddamn if he doesn't have some nice pictures -- worth it even if you're not in the area -- it's not like he will flood your wall with stuff.
Salt Peanuts Posted August 4, 2011 Report Posted August 4, 2011 ^ I wonder how many of them Canon will actually sell. On a completely unrelated note, I'm planning on visiting the Bronx Zoo in couple of weeks and was wondering if anyone had suggestion for a lens for me to rent? I haven't been to a real zoo in few years so I don't remember how far away the critters are. Oh, and right now, I've got 10-22, 35/2, 50/1.8, and 85/1.8.
VPI Posted August 4, 2011 Report Posted August 4, 2011 The 70-200 was my favorite there. Most of the zoo is pretty well lit and very friendly to photography.
Knuckledragger Posted August 4, 2011 Author Report Posted August 4, 2011 Maybe a 70-200 F/4? IS optional. Speaking of the 85/1.8, a friend offered me his for $300 today. I said "maybe." It's not a bad price for a clean used copy of that lens, but now could not be a worse time for me to invest in a new lens.
Salt Peanuts Posted August 4, 2011 Report Posted August 4, 2011 70-200 f/4 sounds good. Maybe I'll win a scratch ticket by then and gets to buy myself a copy (doubtful ). That's a nice price for 85/1.8, especially since the used price for it seems to be have gone up a bit of late.
cetoole Posted August 4, 2011 Report Posted August 4, 2011 Nothing fancy like what has been posted here, but was playing with my new SX230 HS over the weekend around 1am to see how it did no flash. 14x zoom New WTC from Hoboken.
Cankin Posted August 4, 2011 Report Posted August 4, 2011 Holy crapballs. This video is nice, especially it was shot in the area where I spent the first 15 years of my life.
laxx Posted August 4, 2011 Report Posted August 4, 2011 I have a 70-200 f4 you could use if you want.
Jon L Posted August 4, 2011 Report Posted August 4, 2011 Holy crapballs. Wow, I would be VERY scared to carry this $1800 lens with that protruding, unprotected front element. And the hood starts to get in the frame past half the zoom, so one needs to take it off, and protective filters won't fit, either.
crappyjones123 Posted August 10, 2011 Report Posted August 10, 2011 a few from today with the nokton 50/1.1 i just got in the mail this afternoon. coffee with a few friends. last two with the zeiss 35/2.8.
falkon Posted August 10, 2011 Report Posted August 10, 2011 That lens is ultimately disappointing. Contrast is not great, lots of aberration, messy bokeh, and just too expensive. I feel like unless you really NEED the shallow DOF, it's not worth it. I know I'm not making you feel better but it's gotta be said.
Knuckledragger Posted August 11, 2011 Author Report Posted August 11, 2011 Well shee-it. From now until Sunday, I have an original 5D and an EF 35mm F/2 with a working AF motor at my disposal. I have a gig on Saturday, but I think I'm going to get off my arse and go take some pics before then.
