ilikebananafudge Posted July 16, 2008 Report Posted July 16, 2008 I got a question (or a few...). Would buying a pair of SR60s be a good way to see if I liked the Grado 'sound' so to speak? Also, would it be a good way to tell if Grado headphones were comfortable for me or not? Or are all the lines of Grado cans different?
ojnihs Posted July 16, 2008 Report Posted July 16, 2008 sure, i used the sr60 to see if i liked the fit and sound of the grado cans. obviously the higher up cans are going to sound better and better, but you can get the general gist of their lineup with the sr60
grawk Posted July 16, 2008 Report Posted July 16, 2008 I'd recommend getting 225s if you can find them used and afford it. Those are the easiest to resell, and are, in my opinion, the sweet spot in the lineup.
ilikebananafudge Posted July 16, 2008 Author Report Posted July 16, 2008 I was considering that but didn't want to risk hating them and blowing $150+ for them
grawk Posted July 16, 2008 Report Posted July 16, 2008 (edited) You'll find a pair of sr225s used more easily than sr60s, and they resell quickly. So they're almost no risk at all. And watch for a bit and you can generally find them for $150 with flats, or $140 without. Edited July 17, 2008 by grawk
ilikebananafudge Posted July 16, 2008 Author Report Posted July 16, 2008 I shall keep my eyes open. Thanks
postjack Posted July 16, 2008 Report Posted July 16, 2008 I second what grawk said. And just to reemphasize, try them with both flats and bowls if possible, as they change the sound dramatically. Flats are king IMO.
postjack Posted July 16, 2008 Report Posted July 16, 2008 FIFY Actually, recent studies have proved you are wrong.
grawk Posted July 16, 2008 Report Posted July 16, 2008 since flats are fail, when are you sending mine back to me?
riceboy Posted July 16, 2008 Report Posted July 16, 2008 I second what grawk said. And just to reemphasize, try them with both flats and bowls if possible, as they change the sound dramatically. Flats are king IMO. I agree with Jack that it would be good to try them out with flats and bowls. Also, as Grawk pointed out you can find the SR225 for $150 with flats. I do like the SR225 in the Grado lineup as well. Best of luck on your search.
n_maher Posted July 16, 2008 Report Posted July 16, 2008 since flats are fail, when are you sending mine back to me? I just like giving Jack a hard time, I still haven't made up my mind w/ regards to flats on my woodied HF-1s.
grawk Posted July 16, 2008 Report Posted July 16, 2008 np, then keep holding on to them as long as you'd like
ilikebananafudge Posted July 17, 2008 Author Report Posted July 17, 2008 So, flats are the SR60 replacement pads?
grawk Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 No, flats are the joe grado pads that john grado doesn't like anymore.
grawk Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 sacd_lover is selling several pairs on the other side
krrm Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 The cheap and fugly alternative to Grado flats: Earpads SENNHEISER HD414 HD 414 CLASSIC Ear pad Cushion - eBay (item 190236754032 end time Jul-20-08 11:30:11 PDT) I use them on my 225s.
grawk Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 much in the way that a yellow 1969 beetle is an alternative to a 1969 porsche 356c
ilikebananafudge Posted July 17, 2008 Author Report Posted July 17, 2008 Hmm, next time I should probably figure a question like that out for myself.
Nenso Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 If you need/want to save money, just do the good old nickel mod where you cut a hole the size of a nickel (quarter size could work too I believe) from the normal SR60 pads. Don't ask me how does that improve the SQ because I have forgotten, but I listened to the pair of a friend of mine and it wasn't bad. I'm pretty sure you can still find a thread on it somewhere else. If you're starting out on the Grado sound, then the SR60 should be good enough but go with whatever you want. SR60 = Ultimate price : value.
grawk Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 cheapest isn't the best value, generally speaking. Especially if resale is harder.
laxx Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 SR-60's used are dirt cheap. I think I picked up my pair for $30.
