spritzer Posted September 11, 2008 Report Posted September 11, 2008 One of the rules here is internal pix or ban... I would certainly take a look to see what it going on as that is a whole lot nicer then a smoking amp...
penger Posted September 11, 2008 Report Posted September 11, 2008 haha That means I have to unpack it... Have been trying to sell it for a while. I guess by unpacking it and taking some pics, I might do some good for the community. What kind of precautions should I take when opening it up?

You need a hex key to open it up though. me too. i've really liked all the SP amps i've heard. Fanboy!!!! Btw. I may have a Stax setup to send you soon if you can use an adapter instead of an amp. It's an old Stax (1968) but one of my all time favorites as it defines musicality.
n_maher Posted September 11, 2008 Author Report Posted September 11, 2008 Dunno if I should try opening it up to see... is it worth taking a look? Actually now I'm curious how the 14amp external PS chains into the Extreme... I think, but don't hold me to this, that the external PS is the filament supply.
guzziguy Posted September 11, 2008 Report Posted September 11, 2008 Man that makes me 0-2. I have an Extreme and an Apache. Regarding the Extreme... mine is a "new" version with a 14 amp external PS and the piltron. Any idea if he made changes to FET problem? I did notice that the chassis gets really warm when I run it... to the point the volume knob is almost hot to the touch. The Extreme does not have the FET to which Kevin referred. Kevin really knows his shit but he does make mistakes so don't take everything he says as gospel. It isn't. I have an older, one-box Platinum Extreme. Mine runs pretty warm, but not hot. I did open it up and there is some scorching underneath a diode. I recommend that you open yours up and look to see if you have any real problems. The scorching was minor in mine and probably due to over-using output tubes that drew too much current. I also suggest that you search this thread for my posts and posts around them, both to look at pictures and to read about recommendations when opening the amp.
spritzer Posted September 11, 2008 Report Posted September 11, 2008 by adapter, i'm assuming you mean from a power amp? is there an upper limit to the amount of power i'd want to put into said adapter? It can only take a few watts but since it needs mostly voltage you can use it with any amp. I'll PM you once I have it all here.

On my 2 singlepower amps they run a little warm, but the knob is not warm or hot on mine. I do have an Extreme and I was looking at your unit . I know there were some issues with a buzz or hum with the volume all the way at max, but the Extreme I have and the PPX3 SLAM I had before didn't have this problem. It worries me to hear that the knob is hot though. If you do open yours up post some pics . Best of luck Eric.
penger Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 Hey man! I will hopefully get around to opening it up tonight and will definitely take pictures of both the PS and the actual amp when I do. Should I make a new thread for the pictures? Or go ahead and put them here.
n_maher Posted September 12, 2008 Author Report Posted September 12, 2008 Hey man! I will hopefully get around to opening it up tonight and will definitely take pictures of both the PS and the actual amp when I do. Should I make a new thread for the pictures? Or go ahead and put them here. I think putting them here would be just fine. If they spawn some kind of large scale discussion we can always split off that conversation.
riceboy Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 Hey . Either way would work. I guess if you posted them here at least the other posts before this would give some an idea of how it led up to why you posted the pics. It's all up to you . Edit: Nate beat me to it. Just as Nate said.
penger Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 Rgr. Gonna unpack it from its box and see what we can see. Commentary after pics are posted would definitely be appreciated.
penger Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 Now I can't... one of the hex screws was stripped after install, and I can't get the last one off.
tkam Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 Yeah that's one of the problems with using those sorts of screws, half the time you end up having to drill them out when they get overtightened.
Grand Enigma Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 awww someone ruined my fun oh well.
luvdunhill Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 I've drilled them out before, it's quite easy and doesn't really damage anything. I may have some replacement screws I could send you, but I'd have to check.
penger Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 Your fun? What about mine? I love taking stuff apart.
RockCity Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 Kevin mentioned some of the imminent dangers with the design flaws in the ES-1 and Extreme. Are there any problems with the MPX3 and PPX3?
n_maher Posted September 12, 2008 Author Report Posted September 12, 2008 Your fun? What about mine? I love taking stuff apart. Go to the hardware store and ask them if they carry things like "easy-outs" or other similar products. It'll involve a small diameter drill bit and a reverse threaded stud/bit. You should be able to get just about any, non grade 8 bolt out with something like this without harming the surrounding threads. Well, if you're careful anyway.
penger Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 Muahahaha I am victorious. I used a ball-hex screw and got it out by daisy chaining a wrench to make enough leverage to unscrew it.
n_maher Posted September 12, 2008 Author Report Posted September 12, 2008 Could you post the resistor values for the groups that are near the tubes? I'm specifically talking about the ones that are oriented vertically in pairs near each output tube. (Like R6, R7, R8 and R9) I'm really interested to see how hot those might be getting if he's running the current at Menace levels. Love the off-board mounted pot, led and headphone jack too. And, uh, I'd have to check but I don't think that external PS is up to running the 6528s like Mikhail claims it should be. Unless of course the Hammond trafo is rated to run 25% over its rated capacity.
penger Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 They say 250 ohm and then 5%. Let me know if you want more specs. I've only run 6080s and 6AS7s so I can't speak to the 6528s. On a slightly different note... what goes into making his "tube adapters" like the ECC1, ECC2, and 2C51? The last one apparently costs $99... Oh. And would it be a good idea to replace the hex screws with phillips?
JBLoudG20 Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 Um if those are the cathode resistors to the power tube, then 250 is scary low. Those resistors must get motherfuckingpiping hot.
Rob N Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 I have a European version of the Extreme with the out board power supply. It is not designed to run 6528 tubes.
JBLoudG20 Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 Um if those are the cathode resistors to the power tube, then 250 is scary low. Those resistors must get motherfuckingpiping hot. Maybe I'm looking at it wrong, but it looks like (at lest the pair I can see) are going to pin 6: the cathode. Why put them in series, when parallel would help with the heat dissipation?
