crappyjones123 Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 Am I alone in thinking Amazon has failed miserably in their more recent forays in mobile/content consumption devices?
grawk Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 Obviously you aren't alone, several tech blogs have said as much over and over again.
grawk Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 Same. And the kindle. And the kindle fire hd. Fire phone seems like it's a work in progress, but I'm considering it, because they're a freight train.
Dreadhead Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 I've used most of these. The current stuff is not an Apple product pretty lousy, in my opinion. FTFY
Dusty Chalk Posted December 2, 2014 Author Report Posted December 2, 2014 I haven't been paying attention -- have they been coming out with new stuff? I've seen variations on the Kindle -- has there been anything actually new? EDIT: Besides the Firestick, of which I am aware.
postjack Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 I was unimpressed with the fire stick. apple tv is still the king of visual consumption devices for me, and its the only apple product left in my house.
grawk Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 For me the Fire TV Stick and the AppleTV are complementary devices. If Apple ever opens up the appletv to outside developers I won't need the firestick.
shellylh Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 I am just planning to use the Fire Stick for Amazon prime streaming (instead of the PS3). Apple TV for everything else. Is the Fire stick all that bad?
grawk Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 nope, it works really well for the amazon ecosystem. Way better than the amazon apps on my dvd player etc. 1
n_maher Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 I like the fact that they didn't restrict it's streaming ability to just Amazon Prime content. For me it's basically a super cheap way to get Netflix/Hulu to the TV where I workout. And I'm also with Dan, the apps on my smart TV are pretty awful.
blessingx Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 Anyone compare the Fire Stick to Chromecast? Been waiting for next AppleTV version so been relying on Chromecast and its third party support (including Air Parrot 2 a lot likely).
Dusty Chalk Posted December 2, 2014 Author Report Posted December 2, 2014 Heads up, Linn is having it's 24 bits of Christmas, again, this year in December. http://www.linn.co.uk/christmas day two bump
dcpoor Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 (edited) I've read that you can get XBMC and PLEX support/apps on the Fire TV devices. Should make them much more versatile/useful. Edited December 2, 2014 by dcpoor
postjack Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 I am just planning to use the Fire Stick for Amazon prime streaming (instead of the PS3). Apple TV for everything else. Is the Fire stick all that bad? Oh no no no, its not bad. In fact the main reason I bought it was to get access to Prime original programming, but I haven't watched any of those shows yet. I just like the Apple TV much better for typical stuff: hulu, Netflix, renting movies, hbo go, etc. I'm probably just so used to the Apple TV layout, its been my primary way to consume video content for years. Now if a device comes along, which I'm sure it will, that supports Tidal, I can see myself going over to that. 1
Dusty Chalk Posted December 2, 2014 Author Report Posted December 2, 2014 Now if a device comes along, which I'm sure it will, that supports Tidal, I can see myself going over to that. Really? I mean, unless its DAC is competitive with what I've got coming out of my computer, I just don't see it.
postjack Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 Really? I mean, unless its DAC is competitive with what I've got coming out of my computer, I just don't see it. I'm thinking of an HDMI type device that would pass the digital signal along to the receiver, so yeah I'd be relying on the receivers DAC, but I think my Denon receiver sounds pretty good, especially when you throw audyssey into the picture. 1

All feeding your Denon ( assuming it has non HDMI digital ins ) I have android, so I'd really like to be able to stream tidal to the chromecast. That would be ideal. This is what I currently do with Google Play Music. I haven't seen the little cast icon in the android tidal app yet.

Pixel > Tidal Web App > Cast Tab in Chrome > Chromecast Works like a charm. I have no way of knowing if its futzing with the sample rate other than my ears, but at first listen it sounds great. Good snap and crack, good depth to the sound, no compression muddiness. Success! 4
