Dusty Chalk Posted April 22, 2009 Author Report Posted April 22, 2009 Is this: Amazon.com: Western Digital VelociRaptor 300 GB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 2.5 Inch, 16 MB Cache, 10,000 RPM SATA II WD3000HLFS: Electronics ...a good deal? Or is it pretty commonly available for ~US$230, and I can get it for that later?
aardvark baguette Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 The sides are heatsink, which are supposed to fit into a standard 3.5" drive sled.

n_maher Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 Finally got my WOOT batteries, despite what the packaging says both are completely discharged so I'll be curious to see how they last.
atothex Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 About the harddrive: I believe I got that price 5 months ago, so no. It would've been $200 after rebate, but I didn't do that. Unless there's a couple different 300gb Velociraptors?
boomana Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 Head-Direct.com | YUIN I've actually heard these. Pretty basic iems doing nothing majorly wrong and nothing really right. They're not the greatest, but for this price, these are a real deal for gym use or other places where sq isn't that important.
Torpedo Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 I see... I assumed that taking the drive off the sinks could make it fit into a laptop. A 10000rpm HDD would improve a lot any laptop performance.
Voltron Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 Finally got my WOOT batteries, despite what the packaging says both are completely discharged so I'll be curious to see how they last. I am not sure "Ready to use" means charged up but the instructions say to charge them the first time for 8 hours before use. I am finally charging one up today and it seems to be working, according to the little blinky lights.

A 10000rpm HDD would improve a lot any laptop performance. I haven't looked into this drive for a long while, so memory is fuzzy, but I believe WD also came out with a server-grade Velociraptor that doesn't have the heatsink edges. I can only assume it was the proper 2.5" length, but I truthfully don't really remember.
Dusty Chalk Posted April 22, 2009 Author Report Posted April 22, 2009 Yeah, there's three of them, IIRC: there's the one that I and A.--- B.--- linked to, there's the more sleddy style that shows up in the first page of image search, and then there's the one without the sled at all (looks like a normal hard drive). So yeah, you kind of need to be paying attention to what you're buying, but I think the price on all three are similar. So yeah, I think I'll wait. Even if it doesn't come down below US$230 again any time soon, I just shouldn't be spending the US$200+ right now.
n_maher Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 it seems to be working, according to the little blinky lights. Mine is happily blinking as well and is on the 4th bar.
luvdunhill Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 Mine is happily blinking as well and is on the 4th bar. I've charged mine a couple times already. Works great for me, just need to raz them about the wierd-ass power connector on my Chinese DAP and see if they'll make good on providing "any" connector ")
