Grahame Posted October 2, 2009 Report Posted October 2, 2009 Bill Joy's greatest gift to man ? the vi editor ? The Register Real programmers use vi / ed / sed / cat etc. e.g. $ cat > myfile
Dusty Chalk Posted October 2, 2009 Report Posted October 2, 2009 I have used cat, but it better be a short file, and I know what I'm doing.
guzziguy Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 I have used cat, but it better be a short file, and I know what I'm doing. Real unix hacks use "echo".
Dusty Chalk Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 Real unix hacks use "echo".Real unix hacks use "echo". Sorry, that joke never gets old (to me).
grawk Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 ksh<<END echo real unix hacks use redirs, not echo END
Aimless1 Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 Took my two year old grandson to a local sporting goods store. We spent a good hour looking at all the gear and equipment. Fondled the lures, stroked the rods, dreamed through showcases of spinning reels, spotting scopes and handguns. Looked longingly at the row of long arms behind the counter. Admired the graphs and downriggers. Picked up our first arrow, sat in a tree stand and ogled the bows. I may have corrupted him for life!
luvdunhill Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 Come to think of it, I don't know if I've ever even used plain vi rather than vim. I think the closest I've come is when vim gets started up in its compatibility mode and momentarily puzzles me with unexpected behavior. I believe the only operating system that (might still) ship with vi is FreeBSD. The reason I surmise this to be true? I always know I'm on FreeBSD immediately when the recover functionality and visual mode don't work.
luvdunhill Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 ksh<<END echo real unix hacks use redirs, not echo END echo "real hack0rz use vi" | tr "v" "t" | tr "i" "r"
grawk Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 No, all real unixes still ship vi, it's only communist operating systems that ship vim, because the vi license isn't communist.
boomana Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 Ah, and here I thought it was a typo. As did I. Due to yet another unexpected change in work position/schedule, I was off three days, worked one, and am now off again for the weekend. I like it. So far today, I finished the laundry I started last week, cooked a real breakfast, went to the supermarket, and am off to the gym. Now if the cat would only clean the house while I was gone.....
Hopstretch Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 Hit three buckets of range balls. None straight. Ordered pizza. Started drinking. Have six four-year-olds coming over for a rainy-day playdate later -- and you don't wanna deal with that shit sober!
Fitz Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 I believe the only operating system that (might still) ship with vi is FreeBSD. The reason I surmise this to be true? I always know I'm on FreeBSD immediately when the recover functionality and visual mode don't work. Arch64 seems to install vi by default instead of vim, and I would assume the 32-bit ArchLinux does too.
Salt Peanuts Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 Hit three buckets of range balls. None straight. Ordered pizza. Started drinking. Have six four-year-olds coming over for a rainy-day playdate later -- and you don't wanna deal with that shit sober! I read that as sixty-four-year-olds, instead of six four-year-olds. You should just keep them in one of these.
The Monkey Posted October 4, 2009 Report Posted October 4, 2009 Hit three buckets of range balls. None straight. Ordered pizza. Started drinking. Have six four-year-olds coming over for a rainy-day playdate later -- and you don't wanna deal with that shit sober! Amen. Sold my car today.
Dusty Chalk Posted October 4, 2009 Report Posted October 4, 2009 Jeez, the JH13 bug has really bitten you strong.

swt61 Posted October 4, 2009 Report Posted October 4, 2009 Jim Pemry slowly approaches with Hannibal's dinner tray.
tyrion Posted October 4, 2009 Report Posted October 4, 2009 Yesterday, my wife and I hiked some of Red Rock Canyon, NV, then to see KA (Cirque de Soleil) show. The night before we saw The Beatles Love. Both were great. Today, sitting at the airport to go home.
Absorbine_Sr Posted October 4, 2009 Report Posted October 4, 2009 Drove to just outside of Columbus Ohio. Tomorrow I'll do a run down Ohio 555, a nice stretch of twisty road. Tuesday I hope to connect with our very own Reksy to share some local beer and conversation.
Grahame Posted October 5, 2009 Report Posted October 5, 2009 Opened several cans of worms, got shots of a Kinder, Gentler Empire than I seem to remember from my youth.
Hopstretch Posted October 5, 2009 Report Posted October 5, 2009 "These aren't the kids you're looking for. They can go and get an icecream."
grawk Posted October 5, 2009 Report Posted October 5, 2009 Took my son to his 9am hockey game, which they won 5-1. Then took my daughter to her 1pm soccer game, which they won 3-1. Then took all the kids to a skating party. It's been a long day, and I'm out of beer.
