Voltron Posted Friday at 02:38 AM Report Posted Friday at 02:38 AM (edited) I've been having intermittent issues with my Moth Audio system that I was blaming on the amp until I recently discovered that one of them Cicada drivers is dead. Doug helped me troubleshoot and I found no short in the driver but it reads zero ohms. The other one shows 12 ohms as it should. Doug mentioned that someone much more skilled than I would be able to test it out more thoroughly, but I am not sure what the point would be unless it could be repaired. So, does anyone know of a source for Cicada drivers? Does anyone happen to have one or a pair even that they are not using and would be willing to sell? Apparently, Nelson Pass bought all of Craig's stock and then wouldn't sell any of them back to him. NP had some kind of DIY kit with the Cicada drivers and a subwoofer but I don't think those are available anymore, and I don't want a subwoofer. If you have any leads, please let me know. recstar24 Posted Friday at 03:49 AM Report Posted Friday at 03:49 AM I actually believe NP legit is the only source of those drivers. Ages ago I did ask him for a driver and he did sell one to me, but I’d have no idea if he still has them, if he sold them off to someone else, or if he is just hoarding them. 1 1
n_maher Posted Friday at 04:01 AM Report Posted Friday at 04:01 AM Having personally dealt with the fragility of the Cicada drivers I can say at this point i wouldn't bother tracking one down. Back 10 years ago when I built and then had to deal with i think three out of 4 drivers failing, you're better off sourcing matched replacements that work in the existing circuit. They'll never look as cool but they will probably last longer. I can probably dig up what I did for the desktop versions I built long ago. I worked with Craig on that. 4 1
Voltron Posted Friday at 04:33 AM Author Report Posted Friday at 04:33 AM If I could get a proper Cicada driver that worked I would go for it and hope for the best. The cabinet has a scalloped opening so it would need to be modified for a different driver.
dsavitsk Posted Friday at 09:10 AM Report Posted Friday at 09:10 AM A little baffle surgery to accommodate a different driver should be pretty straightforward. Unless someone else has it, it's worth a message to Craig or NP to get the driver specs. That will help choose a supravox or lowther replacement. 1 1
nikongod Posted Friday at 02:30 PM Report Posted Friday at 02:30 PM (edited) Not sure if this is what you need: https://www.superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/blast-from-the-past-moth-cicada-speakers.2011/ Matches the specs on the internet archive of the moth audio website. recstar24 Posted Friday at 06:43 PM Report Posted Friday at 06:43 PM Al, if you do contact Craig just be mindful that the cicada driver thing is a sore subject with him. When I spoke with Craig ages ago, he had mentioned he had a deal with NP, some kind of mutual agreement of purchase of said drivers, but NP had asked Craig the manufacturing source of the drivers (China) of which Craig had shared with him (before actual purchase agreement was settled). I believe at said supposed meeting, Craig was left empty handed as NP didn’t show up (I can confirm that when I asked NP for drivers they were brand new, he must have had some built through the original manufacturer). Craig isn’t a fan last time I checked 1
Voltron Posted Friday at 06:53 PM Author Report Posted Friday at 06:53 PM Thanks Ryan. I'm pretty sure Craig has nothing to offer other than anger over the situation. I may try to reach out to NP to see if there is something available. 1

I recall at one point he was able to procure all stock that existed (because apparently he hoards things?) and was going to do something with them, and ultimately chose not to, so he might as well give you a pair at this point lol
luvdunhill Posted 5 hours ago Report Posted 5 hours ago What type of design is the cicada enclosure? Is it just a ported box?
