Thelonious Monk Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 Astor Piazzolla - Tango: Zero Hour Rarely does music move me to tears, but "Concierto Para Quinteto" may be the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. Astor Piazzolla was the most important composer of the style of music referred to as tango nuevo, literally "new tango." His specific brand of tango nuevo could be described as tango in form, but heavily influenced by classical and jazz in its use of harmony and counterpoint. I don't know anything about the tango, but now I want to learn more. If anyone here at HC is well-versed in tango & tango nuevo, I'd appreciate any recommendations. For the rest of you, if Astor Piazzolla's music doesn't affect you, you're beyond hope. Quote
Thelonious Monk Posted March 22, 2008 Author Report Posted March 22, 2008 I also have Adios Nonino, his album with Gary Burton, and am getting another one in the mail soon. The one I'm getting in the mail is called El Tango. It's basically Borges' poetry with tango. That should be sublime. I'll get the Chesky album, thanks! Quote
guzziguy Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 It probably isn't the same, but Putumayo has a CD out called "Tango Around the World". It has examples of Tango compositions from many different countries. It's fairly well recorded too. Quote
gauche Posted May 29, 2008 Report Posted May 29, 2008 yep, one of my favorite albums. One of my all-time favorite concerts, Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, 1987. Quote
blessingx Posted May 29, 2008 Report Posted May 29, 2008 Tango: Zero Hour would probably be in my desert island 10 CD collection. It's the only I've kept around though. Wish I still had Mar Quote
