swt61 Posted March 16, 2008 Report Posted March 16, 2008 So I set up my lathe last night, and was itchin' to get to it today. I had a piece of East India Rosewood hanging around in the shop, and with nothing really in mind set out to make some wood chips. What I ended up with will probably end up as a post for a multi headphone stand, most likely with 4 hangers attached to a hub mounted to the top of the post and a round thick base at the bottom.
boomana Posted March 16, 2008 Report Posted March 16, 2008 You'll have to post the finished stand. Right now it looks like a very pretty pepper mill.
swt61 Posted March 16, 2008 Author Report Posted March 16, 2008 Hah, it really does. Let's hope it makes a spicy headphone stand too.
Smeggy Posted March 16, 2008 Report Posted March 16, 2008 I really need to get a lathe. I haven't turned anything for nearly 15 years.
aerius Posted March 16, 2008 Report Posted March 16, 2008 Mmmmm curvy Is it just me or does it kinda look like a sex toy?
Fungi Posted March 16, 2008 Report Posted March 16, 2008 Is it just me or does it kinda look like a sex toy? Hardwooddildos.com probably inspired this piece.
swt61 Posted March 16, 2008 Author Report Posted March 16, 2008 Is it just me or does it kinda look like a sex toy? It's just you.
bhd812 Posted March 16, 2008 Report Posted March 16, 2008 Is it just me or does it kinda look like a sex toy? i was just going to say my ex would love that...
Salt Peanuts Posted March 16, 2008 Report Posted March 16, 2008 Dunno, I agree with Vicki that it looks like a rather nice pepper mill. Speaking of which, I need one for my salt.
JBLoudG20 Posted March 16, 2008 Report Posted March 16, 2008 i was just going to say my ex would love that... After being with you...
dc Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 HAHAHA the only thing that came to my mind was a pepper mill, but they seem to use a lighter wood for that did it come off the lathe looking that shiny? or did you put a coat of something on it
swt61 Posted March 17, 2008 Author Report Posted March 17, 2008 HAHAHA the only thing that came to my mind was a pepper mill, but they seem to use a lighter wood for that did it come off the lathe looking that shiny? or did you put a coat of something on it First I tried a wax product made for lathes. It looks like a semi sweet chocolate bar, and you rub it on the project as it's spinning, then buff it down with 0000 steel wool. I didn't care for the glossy sheen it had. I'm more of a satin finish kinda guy (no bling bling), so I went back to my tried and true 5 coats of hand buffed lacquer. It is nice to be able to sand the piece on the lathe though, and you can get a pretty good finish, but I still think a little hand sanding with the direction of the grain is needed for a museum quality finish.
Dusty Chalk Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 Is it just me or does it kinda look like a sex toy?You probably say the same thing about pepper mills.
grawk Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 You probably say the same thing about pepper mills. He probably says the same thing about everything...it is aerius we're talking about.
