postjack Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 I'll probably be ordering some wooden LP racks from http://www.tonyswoodshop.com/. They are half the price of TTVJ's maple LP racks. Tony offers oak or cherry (or mixed hardwood) racks. Is there any structural reason I should choose one wood over the other, or is this purely a cosmetic choice? And if it is purely cosmetic, which wood do you think is prettier?
swt61 Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 In this case it's a cosmetic choice, as both are sturdy hardwoods. I would no doubt favor the Cherry for it's rich beauty, but then again I've just never been a big Oak fan. I'll probably be ordering some wooden LP racks from http://www.tonyswoodshop.com/. postjack Posted March 13, 2008 Author Report Posted March 13, 2008 Damn! His prices are great! No kidding! Really quite a steal. His racks are spoken highly of by a few on sh.tv. I also like that he offers base units to stablize the storage units, and top racks to provide shelf space on top.
luvdunhill Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 steve: the cubes in my office are made by this fellow, and the custom top is as well. I opted for cherry of course.
swt61 Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 The gentleman does nice work then, and his prices are extremely reasonable. He must have a very efficient setup in his shop to keep the labor down.
luvdunhill Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 his joinery is especially fantastic, as is his packing skills. The boxes are like custom fit to the cubes. I'll take a pic later on for you guys.
Spiug31 Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 cherry wood is a redder less yellow colour so I'd probably go for that unless your trying to match it with something already in the room.
postjack Posted March 14, 2008 Author Report Posted March 14, 2008 I just placed an order for two cherry units, finished. I didn't realize that shipping was included in the price. $100 even. I can't believe I almost bought a $400 Boltz rack.

Smeggy Posted March 14, 2008 Report Posted March 14, 2008 I want one of his butchers blocks. Always had a thing for nice big blocks of wood. I think my next amp case will look like a butchers block

Dusty Chalk Posted March 14, 2008 Report Posted March 14, 2008 Isn't oak just slightly heavier? I mean, I know cherry ain't no balsa, but oak is just a plain hernia-inducing gut-buster.

Nah, oak isn't much heavier, for hernias I'd suggest ebony or one of the ironwoods http://www.enotes.com/science-fact-finder/metals-other-materials/does-any-type-wood-sink-water
ronnielee54 Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 Have to put in a vote for cherry. I prefer it's grain much more than oak.
grawk Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 I'd never pick oak for anything if I have an option
mulveling Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 Cherry, by far. I normally prefer even darker finishes, but I've really grown to love the cherry finish on my Tannoys.
kpeezy Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 PJ - Have you gotten yours yet? I'll probably get one next week.
Bob_McBob Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 I avoid oak like the plague. I really don't like the grain pattern.
postjack Posted April 17, 2008 Author Report Posted April 17, 2008 PJ - Have you gotten yours yet? I'll probably get one next week. Yeah, they are perfect. I'll be getting 4 more shortly. I'll take some pics tonight.
postjack Posted May 22, 2008 Author Report Posted May 22, 2008 I'll take some pics in over a month. most of my albums are still in boxes. I really need to order four more of these. They are tough, functional, and cheap. Not the sexiest racks I've ever seen, but they aren't eye sores by any means.
