tyrion
I think I will go with the bumper or just try to hold differently. I don't see how the software fix that is supposed to be coming will help but I guess it's possible.
n_maher
I'm with you, Mike, I fail to see how the bars displaying differently will help with the capacitive coupling that is occurring between the two antennas, which would appear to be the real issue. Furthermore, emelius is right in saying that any sort of non-conductive insulating later between your hand and the phone should help. Dusty Chalk
The only thing the software fix is supposed to fix is that the bars are more accurate -- I.E. they show no bars when there's no signal, rather than 4 bars. So at least you'll know you're holding it wrong, rather than getting incorrect feedback.
grawk
It's possible (and likely) there's more to the fix than what apple's admitting to, but that it will still be fixable with software.

Dusty Chalk
Yeah, you said before, but all reports I've read so far don't point in that direction. I've been finding stories like this one more typical. We'll see, I guess. I should probably take that bet, you're going to regret...
postjack
the dog looks like a cute puppy dog to me. I want a Droid X because I want a bigger screen. My primary concern with any smartphone is not video, audio, or apps, its that I have the most pleasant web browsing experience possible. Bigger screen = easier to read. Many moons remain on my iPhone contract, however.
postjack
Angry Birds is the bomb by the way, if you are looking for a fun trajectory type game. I beat it pretty quickly, playing Simcity a lot now.
Voltron
Not to be a dick w/r/t those who bought the new iPhone, but I sure am glad I didn't even update the OS. It will all get worked out eventually and I am sure there are things to like about the new phones already, but I don't need or want the hassle. I don't see how the software fix that is supposed to be coming will help but I guess it's possible. Would it be in bad taste to throw out a ? I hope so. @Mike... try one of the rubber wristbands. Here is an article (and some others to read from the same person) that you guys may find interesting dealing with what the "scotch tape" and bumpers will and won't do for reception... coming from someone who designs RF antennas. He was talking about things on TWiT this weekend, so if you have some free time (and care enough), maybe you should take a listen. bhd812
It appears that I am having some trouble with the death grip. I dropped two calls with Jp, who was on a land line and I think it is a result of the way I was holding the phone. I will have my bumper next week but was hoping to go without a case. did you hear a "deek deek deek" sound when the call was dropped? if not you may have a proxy issue! recstar24
I believe the software update is simply going to recalibrate how the bars are displayed. So instead of -50db being the threshold for 5 bars, maybe they make it to -100db so that people will stop complaining of losing bars. n_maher
Anyone else having big issues with AT&T lately, or more than normal I should say? My phone keeps spitting out "Could Not Activate Cellular Data Network" errors despite being in 5bar 3G coverage areas that have always worked just fine. My phone also randomly would not/could not find 3G service in down town Portsmouth this afternoon until I did a hard reset. After that it still gave me the data network error a couple of times. VPI
The only problem I am having is the upload speeds but that seems to be affecting a lot of people. DL and voice are working as intended here in NY.

VPI
I got to use my Sprint 4G out in freaking Queens today. Quite fast, I just wish they would get it into Manhattan. 3G is fast but not as fast as usual on the iPhone. Upload is still screwed up. Salt Peanuts
no problems in Cincinnati, but we only have about 3 iPhone users out here in flyover country. At least your zoo is better than the one in Boston.
