Hi all,

Looking at getting something like the Trends UD-10. Basically just want a quick and dirty USB-Toslink convertor. Looked at the Hagerman units and they only have coax or AES/EBU.

Any suggestions would be welcome. If you know of a place to get the Trends cheap, that would be great as well.

Thanks,

Jay

The M-Audio Transit will do it. The drivers have a very small footprint, and you get bit perfect without monkeying with any other software.

And I have tested this with the DTS pass through test to my receiver. Unfortunately it only has toslink.

The Trends is only bit more and has an external PSU as well as a host of outputs... though I will likely only use Toslink anyways. It doesn't have its own drivers though. Hmmm...

Ah alright didn't know you wanted really budget. You can try the Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro, but I really feel this is one of those you get what you pay for items. It might not be worth your time trying to get the damn thing to output anything other than pops and clicks with the music.

If you're looking for bit perfect optical output, I can still recommend the apple airport express. It's bit perfect even with windows. There's software to let you direct any audio to it, or you can use itunes.

I can setup airport express to output all sound from my computer? System beeps, music, video, games, etc?

If so, that sounds like a pretty slick/sick solution. ;)

You are SUCH an apple pimp grawk. :D

did they figure out the delay that you used to get if you used it with quicktime and such? i remember the audio wouldn't sync right with the picture.

No idea, I don't use it.

Lemme know what you find ojnihs... if it is just with Quicktime, that isn't a deal breaker with me as I rarely use it. Mainly I just want the ability to play games and route the sound to my hi-fi rig.

From airfoils site... "1. Due to delays inherent in the AirPort Express, Airfoil is not recommended for use in conjunction with video."

So, that likely means it wont work well with games. It's looking like a USB to toslink adapter is the best way to go.

Anyone know of any DIY designs? Right now it is looking like the Trends UD-10 and the M-Audio Transit are the only serious 'audiophile' contenders for a commercial solution.

I'd go with the 0404 usb. i use it mainly for its balanced analog outs so i can use my powered monitors. plus having the usb to optical or coaxial doesn't hurt at all.

I wouldn't use the balanced outs, but I believe you can hookup keyboards, guitars, and microphones directly to it... which could be cool if I ever get off my ass and buy and electric bass. :D

Forgot to mention that I will be using this with the Behringer DEQ2496 that I just bought... so I don't need any functionality that it already has. I plan on modding the DEQ with newer DACs [probably the same ones that are used in the transporter], a better PSU and a zapfilter output stage. Will be feeding it using AES/EBU from my Eastsound and with optical from whatever I buy as a computer interface. Should be fun. :)
