When I was in grad school my car was broken into (driver window smashed) and the radio, some CDs, and my flute and clarinet were stolen (they were quite nice too even if they weren't my main instrument).

So I walk out of the Music building in Greensboro, walk to my car down the street (nice residential area too, not some shithole) and notice that my car was broken into and stuff was stolen.

The kicker....there was a cop not 50 yards away on the adjacent street minding their little speed trap for that section of town. So, since it was 12:00am and the music building was closed (hence, no phone, I didn't own a cell at the time) I walk to the police car and explain what I just found. he told me to go to the music building and call 911! WTF, you are the police! I explained that the building was closed and I couldn't get in and he told me to call in the morning. I kindly explained that I would like him to radio an officer to come out and write a report since I need something for the insurance company and I wanted to mention the $2000 worth of instruments that I lost (could have cared less about the radio and the CDs). Nope, call in the morning, someone will come out.

FUCK ME. So i drive home pissed and garbage bag up the window and vacuum out the broken glass and call GEICO, my insurance.

GEICO came out to the car while I was at school the next day with an adjustor and a window replacement guy...they came out at 10:00am! i called the cops that morning and they couldn't spare anyone until 3:00pm that day and she was late and didn't come until 4:30ish. Then she gave me shit for cleaning the car and replacing the window...at which point I explained how her colleague wouldn't help me last night and how my insurance company seemed more concerned about getting things taken care of than the cops. I took her badge number and found out about the officer the night before and filed a complaint.

Fortunately my insurance company was able to replace the window, radio, money for the CDs and money for a new clarinet and flute. The deductible was pretty small if I remember.

Funny, I went to UNCG, as did my wife... :)

Sorry to hear this, Dan. I once had my cell phone stolen, and the thief called my mother later in that day (she was on my contacts with her name, not as "Mom"). My mom picked up, and at this point aware that my phone's been stolen, proceeded to berate the thief until he hang up.

Arundel Mills, huh? I was just there...I better warn my sister (she's staying at the Residence Inn there). Whereabouts did you park?

Right by the food court, but apparently cars all around the lot got hit yesterday

that sucks. have you tried a different outlet? maybe you should unplug it before you manhandle it.

the thing is that i'm plugging it into a surge protector, and all the other electronics that i have plugged into it don't seem to have a problem. it may be that they're not wired the same way as the dac-ah, but god damn, that fucking shocked the shit right out of me.

i can check it out, for you. you don't need it to actually be fixed, right?

well i don't know shit when it comes to this, but if the ground test doesn't pass, i'll let you know, thanks reks

Change it to monthly instead of weekly, I did that over the xmas holiday so it wouldn't go all blank on me. Yours would look like this if you did:

good god i just got worked by my dac-ah again. was trying to pull out the rca plugs and ZAP! fuck me. i'm not going to use this for a bit.

Man, it sure sounds like you've got a short going to ground which is likely tied to the case. If it were me I'd pop the lid and see how the IEC inlet is wired and post a pic or two. Maybe it's something simple.

Thanks a bunch Nate. I'll take some pictures asap if you could take a look at it later. I opened it up yesterday but hell, I didn't know what the fuck I was looking at.
