tkam Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/04/warner-goes-blu-ray-exclusive/ Huge news in the format war gives blu-ray about a 75-80% share of the studios.
n_maher Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 This just in from engadget: HD DVD group cancels CES press conference in wake of Warner announcement: daaamn
Chekhonte Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 I've never been more glad to own a PS3 than right now.
deepak Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 This just in from engadget: HD DVD group cancels CES press conference in wake of Warner announcement: daaamn God damn... HD-DVD
tkam Posted January 5, 2008 Author Report Posted January 5, 2008 Yeah honestly it's really crucial that one of the two win in the end if they ever want to get mass market acceptance anywhere near the scale that DVD has. I'm sure Warner realized that as well, oh and I'm sure Sony paid them a crap load of money
deepak Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 Yeah honestly it's really crucial that one of the two win in the end if they ever want to get mass market acceptance anywhere near the scale that DVD has. I'm sure Warner realized that as well, oh and I'm sure Sony paid them a crap load of money $500 million
Chekhonte Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 Well sony is rolling in money with the epic success of the PS3 and all.
Edwood Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 Great. Now both formats WILL die. Way to go, Sony. Warner is laughing all the way to the bank. Sony is so far in the hole because of the PS3, now when BetaRay goes down the hole along with HD-DVD, Sony will lose even more. Perhaps they might now be able to recover for a long time. Oh, well.
Dusty Chalk Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 Yeah honestly it's really crucial that one of the two win in the end if they ever want to get mass market acceptance anywhere near the scale that DVD has.I'm not sure I agree with this. I agree that it could be confusing, but it could just as easily be solved by making universal players, then people wouldn't care.
tkam Posted January 5, 2008 Author Report Posted January 5, 2008 I'm not sure I agree with this. I agree that it could be confusing, but it could just as easily be solved by making universal players, then people wouldn't care. Because that worked out so awesomely for dvd-a and sacd......
grawk Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 Because that worked out so awesomely for dvd-a and sacd...... HDTV sells slightly better than high quality soundsystems tho...
Dusty Chalk Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 Because that worked out so awesomely for dvd-a and sacd...... Sony never dropped their licensing for SACD, making it not financially feasible for most non-Sony companies to develop a universal player. So as far as I'm concerned, Sony sabotaged that effort. It never became de rigueur to make a universal player, which is what really needs to happen to eliminate the confusion aspect. It's still early enough in the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray debacle to overcome that obstacle.
tkam Posted January 5, 2008 Author Report Posted January 5, 2008 Warner exec now saying they weren't paid to make the switch: http://formatwarcentral.com/index.php/2008/01/04/warners-tsujihara-says-no-payoff-for-move-to-blu-ray/ Who knows if it's true or not
JBLoudG20 Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 Damn, I just got my replacement A3, lol. Good thing I took your advice, Todd, and went dual format with my PS3
tkam Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 and to put the nail halfway in the hd-dvd coffin.....http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/paramount-following-warner-out-the-hd-dvd-door/ only Universal left I doubt they can afford to stay it alone for very long.
n_maher Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Yikes, some dvd player manufacturers are going to take a bath on this one, eh? The one good thing is that hopefully this will allow companies like Oppo to now start working on a BluRay player.
tkam Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 well Toshiba was the only one to really make hd-dvd players in any serious number. after the warner announcement they talked about making a combo hd-dvd/blu-ray player. i'm not so sure they'll even bother with the hd-dvd part anymore now .
deepak Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Heh I doubt Toshiba is as adamant as Sony...
Dusty Chalk Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 and to put the nail halfway in the hd-dvd coffin.....http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/paramount-following-warner-out-the-hd-dvd-door/ only Universal left I doubt they can afford to stay it alone for very long.Gives new meaning to "universal" player. Although this will not likely last long -- sure looks like it's over.
ojnihs Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 Fuck yes blu-ray. Thank god I didn't go buy an hd-dvd player.
JBLoudG20 Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 Fuck yes blu-ray. Thank god I didn't go buy an hd-dvd player. I figure that my A3 will work good as an upconverting DVD player, to keep wear and tear off my PS3. Plus, I can hope for clearance HD-DVD's
ojnihs Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 Plus, I can hope for clearance HD-DVD's good point
deepak Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 I figure that my A3 will work good as an upconverting DVD player, to keep wear and tear off my PS3. Plus, I can hope for clearance HD-DVD's I'm going to buy a bunch to show the grandkids. "Back in my day we had these format wars, good times. 2 Fast 2 Furious? That was one of our masterpieces of modern cinema, they don't make them like that anymore"
