I posted about this over in the TTVJ forum, but I'd like to snag the HC opinion as well:

This phono looks very versatile. I like the idea of a tube MM stage, while throwing in the SS to beef up the output for MC. And Todd says it should be available in 2-3 weeks.

I didn't realize it was coming out that soon. It certainly looks interesting to me. I just need a turntable.

Jack,

In either case (MM/MC) there is a SS gain stage prior to the tube gain stage.

For moving-magnet cartridges, the preamp uses a high-quality audio opamp gain stage at the input. The use of a opamp here provides very low noise, and a low impedance to drive a passive RIAA network.

<snip>

For moving-coil cartridges, an additional solid-state differential amplifier stage is inserted before the opamp stage.

Bold added for emphasis.

Ah, so it is hybrid all the way. An additional SS gain stage. My apologies for the error.

No worries, I trust Pete to have done it right so I wouldn't worry. People judge his work with a bit too much focus on the low-voltage hybrid which is kind of like deciding whether or not you like a car based on the brake pedal cover.

Of course, the most important question remains unanswered: how does the phono stage look? :) Todd said he'd put up some pictures in the next few days.

pretty poor SNR.

I was under the impression that most phono stages had pretty poor SNR due to the extremely high gain required, have I been misled? Most solid state ones that I've seen aren't above 80 and my bugle isn't rated much better than the TTVJMH.

I measured my Xono-ish clone on some fancy HP thingy they have here at work and it was around -83dB @ 1mV for MC and in the -90's for MM measured at 10mV. My cartridge is 0.24mV output...

I used to have the numbers for the Klyne System 7 phono preamp and they were insanely low... even lower than say the Zyx Artisan which is ~95dB for MM

MC ones are especially difficult because of the additional gain needed, but not all of them. Specifically, whichever ones Hirsch and Juan use are both pretty good (and since Hirsch has multiples, I'll specify that I particularly like the one he has on his VPI -- I don't know which one it is, and I don't know which one Juan uses; I think I've also heard that little penguin logo'ed one, whatever it's called -- I think it's the Firestone Audio Korora). My X-LP2 is 75/82 "A" weighted (whatever that means).

oh, I know it'll take a while... I actually planned on it and ordered before I really needed it and planned on saving up for it while I waited. It's really only a week late at this point. I'm not too worried though. I'm sure that even if it takes a little while Peter will take care of me.

I guess the pre-order only lasted a day or so. You are right, Mike, it was $695 when Jack posted about it on Head-Fi but it's now listed at $850.

yup, that was probably my fault. I think me posting about it jogged Todd to get the price changed. :kitty:

$850 is getting on up into the "well I could spend $150 more to get a <insert $1000 phono stage here>" territory, so I'm going to wait for some more news on this player.

I should have jumped at the $695 price but I didn't know much about it. I have mixed feelings on changing the price like that but Todd's a cool guy so I'll cut him some slack. It's $150 more. If it can compete with $1000 phono statges then at $850 it's a good deal. A lot of you guys speak highly of Peter Millet (I'm pretty sure I've never heard one of his amps) so I'm hoping this is a contender and add to that a chance to support Todd it could be worthwhile to give it a try.

Maybe Todd would give you a loaner to take to MOA? If it's a good deal, he would be smart to do so.

He should have one by then. I think I will give him a call on Monday. Good idea.

Dude, you owned a Wheatfield HA-2, you've heard a Millett amp. Wheatfield = Millett.
