n_maher Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 I have two sets of DIY Canare Starquad speaker cables and I find them nothing special, cheap yes but the sound is a bit muddy if anything, Not bad but not great. When you say starquad do you mean the IC wire or did you use the 4S11 speaker wire which is technically also a starquad type cable. I've use cables built using 4S11 and don't find them muddy at all. But I've got a pretty pedestrian speaker rig so maybe my gear isn't resolving enough.
Salt Peanuts Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 Speaking of speaker cables, anyone here has experience with both Canare 4S11 and Anti-Cables? I'm trying to decide between the two as they're both about the same price when bought in unfinished bulk.
grawk Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 I'd be shocked if you couldn't get canare cheaper than anti-cables. Have you checked markertek?
Salt Peanuts Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 Yeah, 4S11 is $1.17/foot from markertek. Anti-Cable is $1.25/foot, at least the last time I checked with them.
Salt Peanuts Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 Keep the kitty away from those! Oh, I know. Thankfully, they haven't really shown too much liking to cables - yet.
n_maher Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 Speaking of speaker cables, anyone here has experience with both Canare 4S11 and Anti-Cables? Yes, I have. And while I can't make any meaningful sonic comparison I can say that I greatly prefer working with the Canare. The anti-cables need to be the exact length you need or they require annoyingly precise coiling to make them look decent and still have a tendency to resemble a spring when coiled.

That's actually good to know - didn't know about that bit regarding the Anti-Cables. It looks like I'll be getting myself some 4S11.
tkam Posted June 19, 2008 Author Report Posted June 19, 2008 Oh, I know. Thankfully, they haven't really shown too much liking to cables - yet. Lucky you, mine likes to run behind the stereo/ht rig . She hasn't chewed or clawed any of the cables yet but I still like to try to keep her from getting back there.

I used the 4S11, but if you have seen any of my cable builds, it might be the builder, not the cable. I did say "a bit muddy" not real bad just slightly and yes they were used in a fostex 166 based system, but it could be me.
LFF Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 Some the best cable I have seen and heard is from Home Depot extension cords. Just cut off the plugs at the end and terminate them as you wish. The sound is nice, warm and detailed. Give it a shot.
n_maher Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 The best I've heard is JPS labs... Dude, how could you forget the Jena Pathfinder cables...
spritzer Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 Dude, how could you forget the Jena Pathfinder cables... My bad!!! Those Jena must be the bestest ever though not as good as the Tara Labs Omega or Transparent Opus. The carbon network boxes make all the difference.
aardvark baguette Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 looks like a girlscout friendship bracelet, or somfin
JBLoudG20 Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 looks like a girlscout friendship bracelet, or somfin Oh Chris, please be my BFF?
Augsburger Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 Nate I do not believe I gave you permission to show pics of my builds. You will be hearing from my attorney, as soon as he gets out of jail.
Dusty Chalk Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 the best cables i've heard were 12 silver marmots, each holding the tail of the one in front of it.You guys are really delivering the :D's today.
