acidbasement Posted December 10, 2013 Report Posted December 10, 2013 I've never been at that cold in my life. We'll usually get down to -40, or near enough, at least once per year. Hence my pyromania.
acidbasement Posted December 11, 2013 Report Posted December 11, 2013 (edited) Fire and warm clothing are my best friends. It's actually not so bad at -40, because there is never wind at that temperature. Edited December 11, 2013 by acidbasement
grawk Posted December 11, 2013 Report Posted December 11, 2013 There are fewer whiners in areas that regularly see -40
acidbasement Posted December 11, 2013 Report Posted December 11, 2013 A friend from the Yukon once told me that windchill values were quoted by southerners (i.e. me) to make us feel tough.
Dusty Chalk Posted December 11, 2013 Report Posted December 11, 2013 Wait, what? -25 to -32 celsius? That's crazy. There are fewer whiners in areas that regularly see -40 Yup. I'd see that and I'd be, "nope, time to move". I mean, don't get me wrong, I don't mind the DC-area cold, but I don't think I could handle shivering uncontrollably for hours at a time.
Torpedo Posted December 11, 2013 Report Posted December 11, 2013 There are fewer whiners in areas that regularly see -40 Sure, people'd need to be as tough as you to stand that At -20ºC I can feel how my brain starts to slow down. I wouldn't whine, but for sure I'd look for something warmer. I'm growing kind of "aged".
grawk Posted December 11, 2013 Report Posted December 11, 2013 My experience says most people do ok in those areas. You just plan for it better. You dress appropriately (flannel or quilted lining pants, sweaters, fleeces, etc), you start your car 5 minutes before going to it, so it's warmed up, etc. It's just a matter of what you expect.

I'll admit, we've been whining a bit lately. Fuel efficiency in the car has dropped by 25%, and the kids are driving us crazy because we can't just toss them outside for an hour to burn off steam (I suppose people in cities have a hard time doing this anyway though, regardless of weather). acidbasement Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 -20 this morning. That's more like it! 1
n_maher Posted December 14, 2013 Report Posted December 14, 2013 The snow started in earnest about 15 minutes ago. The current forecast is calling for 10-14" mixed in with some sleet/freezing rain by late tomorrow.

The current forecast is calling for 10-14" mixed in with some sleet/freezing rain by late tomorrow. That latter part is the part that ends up making things suck on an absolutely level. Snow makes people crazy in the DC area, but I can deal once it's cleared/salted/whatevered. But icy conditions suck, I don't care if it's on top of the snow underneath.
Salt Peanuts Posted December 15, 2013 Author Report Posted December 15, 2013 Finished shoveling my driveway, with an assist from a neighbor with his snow blower. Now I'm just waiting for it to turn into a sheet of ice.
bozebuttons Posted December 15, 2013 Report Posted December 15, 2013 Mother nature took care of yesterdays snow fall about 3-4 inches, snow turned into rain. Woke up this morning and the snow was all gone
n_maher Posted December 15, 2013 Report Posted December 15, 2013 We got between 10 and 12". Thankfully it was light, fluffy stuff so it wasn't misery clearing the driveway. If it stays cold for the next week and a half the ski areas around here might be off to their first good start in years.
acidbasement Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 We got around 6" last night, with substantial drifting from the wind. Now we're back into the deep freeze. -35C by morning. I'm going to try to say this as eloquently as possible: fuck.
skullguise Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 You cannot BE eloquent at -35C! Stay warm and safe Iain!
acidbasement Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 Warm and safe is no problem, Todd - we're not going anywhere except making more frequent trips to the woodpile. Have I mentioned I like fire?
acidbasement Posted December 31, 2013 Report Posted December 31, 2013 -41 this morning. Coldest day of 2013.
Aura Posted January 2, 2014 Report Posted January 2, 2014 (edited) Weather report is saying we'll hit 11 inches by tonight. Edited January 2, 2014 by Aura
recstar24 Posted January 2, 2014 Report Posted January 2, 2014 I cannot remember the last time it has snowed this continuously for such an extended period.
