Dusty Chalk Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 I should go home. Hell is about to freeze over. Quote
n_maher Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 Incoming ordinance - 8-12" due tomorrow morning starting just in time to make the morning commute nasty and lasting all day. Quote
Dusty Chalk Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 They're saying up to 1/2" of ice over here. Ice. Basically they're saying, no-one can drive on that shit, not even the trucks that are supposed to spread the stuff that makes it drive-on-able. Quote
Salt Peanuts Posted February 5, 2014 Author Report Posted February 5, 2014 (edited) Incoming ordinance - 8-12" due tomorrow morning starting just in time to make the morning commute nasty and lasting all day. x2. Though my work (public school) will most likely be closed tomorrow. Unfortunately, I probably won't know for certain until about an hour before I'm supposed to be at work. skullguise Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 (edited) They just cancelled my town, I'll work from home tomorrow..... EDIT: Whoa, Dusty, just read your post....that's some fucked up weather! Edited February 5, 2014 by skullguise Quote
n_maher Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 Good luck Dusty, ice is decidedly worse than snow in most cases. And yes, they've cancelled both my wife's school and Lily's for tomorrow. I will, however, solder on and go to work. Quote
Salt Peanuts Posted February 5, 2014 Author Report Posted February 5, 2014 I stand corrected - they just cancelled my school. Quote
skullguise Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 I will, however, solder on and go to work. Brave man, Nate. Be safe, and keep your soldering gun hidden Quote
Dreadhead Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 I really hope that the ice doesn't happen. I have way too much crap to get done at work and I have been through 2 massive ices storms (once in Kingston Ontario and once in Michigan) and that was enough. Quote
HeadphoneAddict Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 This photo was at 1:30PM, and then it dumped another 7-8" by 6PM. I had to take the snow blower out at lunch and dinner time to clear the driveway, and by 7PM we had another 2-3" on the driveway. At dinner time I actually had to do the driveway and sidewalk twice back to back, just so the accumulation wouldn't be back to 6-7" by the morning. I also did my neighbor's driveway, and he had two foot snowdrifts to deal with. No snow day for Ben, but school is on a 2 hour delay for Wed. Quote
n_maher Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 2" on the ground when I left the house around 7 and it's coming down pretty good. The forecast remains pretty much the same, ~1" an hour for the remainder of the day with the added bonus of 20-30mph winds. Quote
grawk Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 We got 1/2" of ice. I can't get out of my driveway, we're losing tree branches pretty regularly, and we don't have power. I tried salting my driveway and slid half way down it. It's a lovely day. 1 Quote
Pars Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 ^ Yeah, ice sucks. Stay safe guys. We got maybe 4" so far, made the drive into work really slow. Had to jump my son's car to move it last night (needs a battery), and a cop gave him a ticket yesterday for it being parked in the cul de sac for days. Put the car in the driveway last night, had to jump it this morning and put it back out on the street. Will replace the battery tonight. Love how he waits for the best days for these things Quote
n_maher Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 Hang in there, Dan. We haven't had a major ice storm here for a few years (knock on wood) but I remember what a pain in the ass they were. Lately it's been really heavy snow and wind. I noticed a few weeks back, when I took the Xmas tree way out back to put it on the burn pile, that we lost a 40' birch tree this winter. It must have come down during one of the major wind events that we had but was still surprising to see. Quote
skullguise Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 What Nate said, good luck and stay warm and safe, Dan. Quote
Voltron Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 Good luck Dan and the rest of the winter sufferers. My daughter texted this morning that Vassar had a foot of snow overnight but refused to call a snow day today. Quote
Grahame Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 Presumably it's just "character building" at the moment. Quote
grawk Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 Driveway is clear now. Just need power to come back. Quote
Absorbine_Sr Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 Another few inches overnight here. Now that it's stopped snowing the wind has picked up, so everything that was plowed/shoveled is blowing closed again. This has been a bitch of a winter so far round these parts. Quote
n_maher Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 Ice storms are the reason I have a generator and transfer switch. The setup is sufficient to provide heat/hotwater, power to about half the house (most importantly the fridge/freezer) and cook in the microwave. I've only had to use it once in the last three years but it was nearly worth it from that instance alone and the peace of mind is hard to put a value on with two little kids. 1 Quote
grawk Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 came back from lunch and our power was back. So all in all, not too bad. Missed one day of work where I could use the extra sleep to help recover from last week's flu. We kept the fridge and freezers closed, so hopefully no harm there. Quote
Pars Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 ^ Glad to hear it Dan! Another few inches overnight here. Now that it's stopped snowing the wind has picked up, so everything that was plowed/shoveled is blowing closed again. This has been a bitch of a winter so far round these parts. Agreed. This one is the suckiest winter I can recall since moving to Chicago in the late '80s. Quote
skullguise Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 Good news, Dan.....think the fridge/freezer contents should be OK.....maybe check out/trash the riskiest of things in the fridge Quote
Salt Peanuts Posted February 5, 2014 Author Report Posted February 5, 2014 Just finished shoveling after three and half hours. I really should buy myself a snow blower. Quote
n_maher Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 A solid 10" here but not too heavy so clearing the driveway wasn't too bothersome. The forecast for the weekend is not looking good. Quote
