emelius Posted January 6, 2014 Report Posted January 6, 2014 They made travel illegal in Indy last night...Gonna rethink things at noon... -14°F & a foot of snow/ice, currently...
Pars Posted January 6, 2014 Report Posted January 6, 2014 Just got a call from my son; apparently our power went out about half an hour ago. Hope they get it restored soon (says around 3:00). Otherwise, I'll have to talk them thru how to shut off the water and drain the system if the temp approaches freezing. So far thermostat says 69 or so, so it doesn't appear to be dropping very fast. Joy.
Grahame Posted January 6, 2014 Report Posted January 6, 2014 NOAA says .... Blame Canada? Today's Phrase: "Polar Vortex" Stay Safe and warm everyone.
tkam Posted January 6, 2014 Report Posted January 6, 2014 One of my co-workers had his furnace stop working this morning, pretty damn awful timing.
Absorbine_Sr Posted January 6, 2014 Report Posted January 6, 2014 I just tinkered with our furnace as it started short cycling. So far so good.
Pars Posted January 6, 2014 Report Posted January 6, 2014 Power is back on, house had only dropped to 67 at the time, so good. That sucks Todd re. your friend's furnace. Hope they get it fixed! Crossing fingers for you Mike!
luvdunhill Posted January 6, 2014 Report Posted January 6, 2014 Hard to describe why this is the case, but they ran out of places to put the snow where I live. Heh. Also I inflicted what felt like someone slamming my hand in a door by not wearing gloves for like 5 minutes and shoveling snow. Ouch.
Dusty Chalk Posted January 6, 2014 Report Posted January 6, 2014 Snow is mostly washed away here but I am contemplating running to REI to get a big puffy coat for tomorrow as I am not prepared at all for the temperatures tomorrow.Dew et. Temperatures have started to plummet already. Sent from mah phone-blet via Tapatalk
Absorbine_Sr Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Furnace is good. Cleaned a flame-probe-thing (technical term) and all is working well. 1
aardvark baguette Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 i skimped on having the furnace checked this year. dice.jpg
n_maher Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Every time we have our furnace serviced it has an issue within 30 days.
shellylh Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Hope everyone keeps warm tonight! I cannot imagine how cold it is there. We are just hoping it stays above 20 so the pipes don't burst. We are such wimps in the south.
n_maher Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Shelly, if you're that worried it might be worth running a tap or two all night to keep the water moving. Better a inflated water bill (if you're on town/city water) than a broken pipe.
Grahame Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Broken pipes are not to be recommended. 1
acidbasement Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 NOAA says .... Blame Canada? Today's Phrase: "Polar Vortex" Stay Safe and warm everyone. We at Canada do humbly apologize for crapping our cold weather on our neighbours to the south. It was -38 here this morning, but the windchill value was -49 C. School buses didn't run today, so Magnus got one more day of holidays before school starts back up. This winter is pretty crazy so far, even by Manitoba standards. It was the second-coldest December since we started keeping records. We're burning a lot of wood, but the house is keeping warm.

Obviously not burning enough wood... perhaps coal would make things better.
acidbasement Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 I have no coal. Do you think tires would make a good substitute?
acidbasement Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 With two kids and eight pets, I've burned the shit of at least four species. 1
grawk Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 you could get some 1" styrofoam and make a box to go around the outside of the air conditioner for the winter. My solution (last night) was to pull the AC out and close the window
n_maher Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 We keep our heat on the second floor at 63/64 so the situation seems fine to me. It's not fun to be pissing away $, assuming heat is not included in your rent, but the temp seems perfectly livable.
jvlgato Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 (edited) Sux, Jacob. The only solution I ever found for that was what Dan did ... pull out the unit and close the window. You can't get it from the jnside? Or ask the landlord to get it? Edited January 7, 2014 by jvlgato
aardvark baguette Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 5 degrees when I turned the car on. Power windows don't exist at 5 degrees, apparently. When I got to work it was a luxurious 7 degrees. That was better.
grawk Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 The temperature made me miss alaska. The wind also made me miss alaska (no wind in fairbanks)
