The Monkey Posted May 16, 2012 Report Posted May 16, 2012 If it's an end rig then why are you looking for another headphone rig?

He's not done downgrading - he's gotta cut another $100 off his rig to hit the goal. I'd recommend a Behringer UCA202 in place of the Pico DAC. NwAvGuy loves those.

grawk Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 I have a rig that's pretty close now. Used RS2s, Used Glite, and Behringer DEQ2496. I paid less than $500 for the 3 together.
roadtonowhere08 Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 Yep, once I heard my first Grado, nothing else did it for me. They are not the last word on just about anything, but they are damn fun, and that's all that matters to me.
grawk Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 Actually, I may be able to add a speaker rig to that combo, and STILL be under $500. Realistic STA-111 and Minimus 7 speakers. I'm probably within $50 of $500 including them.
grawk Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 Oh, I probably am not keeping the grado rig, I enjoy my grados, but the ATH-W10VTGs and JH13s are really all I need for headphones. I just bought them because I got a phenomenal deal on them, and I hadn't heard the RS2s. Same for the Glite.

HeadphoneAddict Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 it does if you like them Only if I can use EQ. Screw it, I'm sticking with the PSB Imagine Mini and $700 over budget...
grawk Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 Ooh, actually, the rig I listen to the absolute most is also under $500 afore mentioned behringer, plus airmotiv 4s. I have a mixer in between, but it's just a passive volume control, and the speakers have volume knobs.

cheeq Posted May 18, 2012 Report Posted May 18, 2012 If it's an end rig then why are you looking for another headphone rig? Because of the number of knowledgable folks here who keep saying that cheap stax's are the best things since sliced bread. or maybe because i'm a big fan of following the crowd, but i think that belongs in the other headphone forum. He's not done downgrading - he's gotta cut another $100 off his rig to hit the goal. I'd recommend a Behringer UCA202 in place of the Pico DAC. NwAvGuy loves those. I'm with roadtonowhere08 now is this a serious suggestion? and excuse my ignorance is this even a DAC? given the NwAvGuy reference, i dont know how to take this!
grawk Posted May 18, 2012 Report Posted May 18, 2012 no no, we say that expensive stax with more expensive amps are the best thing since sliced bread. We're not really a value oriented group. I'm with roadtonowhere08 now is this a serious suggestion? and excuse my ignorance is this even a DAC? given the NwAvGuy reference, i dont know how to take this! And that's why you should spend more time reading
cheeq Posted May 18, 2012 Report Posted May 18, 2012 appreciated, and note taken. as a student, i'll hopefully go slow and steady, but we'll start somewhere.
Dusty Chalk Posted May 19, 2012 Report Posted May 19, 2012 I'd probably go with a $400 Sony Vaio laptop and a pair of MDR-7506/-V6's. I've been listening to this combination quite a bit lately, and there's a nice bit of synergy between the Sony'ses.
grawk Posted May 19, 2012 Report Posted May 19, 2012 I specifically wasn't including the laptop (or iphone, etc) because I have to have those for other things.
Kirosia Posted May 23, 2012 Report Posted May 23, 2012 Ipod Touch, whichever model is most recent and pretentious Triple.Fi. 10 (it can be found periodically for $100) Remaining cash goes to cloth hand puppets.
NoValidTitle Posted July 12, 2012 Report Posted July 12, 2012 We're not really a value oriented group. Probably the most true thing I've ever read here. I would probably live with a pair of porta pros and the best used amp I could get my hands on with the left over $450.
jwzhan Posted July 12, 2012 Report Posted July 12, 2012 W1000X that I got for $370 and second hand Audinst HUD-MX1 for the rest $130 (or the best DAC/AMP I can find for $130)
grawk Posted July 12, 2012 Report Posted July 12, 2012 what makes this audinst thing better any other cheap crappy dac/amp combo?
jwzhan Posted July 12, 2012 Report Posted July 12, 2012 what makes this audinst thing better any other cheap crappy dac/amp combo? no difference. It's just the first thing that came to mind.
