Pars Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 The Dandy Warhols Curve Secret Machines The Sensational Alex Harvey Band and even A Flock of Seagulls (love the guitarist)
The Monkey Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 and even A Flock of Seagulls (love the guitarist) Ah, I will second that one. Have always been a fan.
Pars Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 are there really people who don't like either of those? hell, now here is nowhere is one of my reference discs! I never hear anyone talk about them, even on HF, so I assumed I was a minority... Speaking of now here is nowhere, what is your impression of the recording quality? I think it is very good, devoid of much of the compression plaguing most modern recordings, yet i do detect a bit of clipping.
boomana Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Diamanda Galas. Freaky and amazing. My friends run away.
Dusty Chalk Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 She is an acquired taste (and in the interest of full disclosure, one I have not fully acquired yet). Curve are great.
boomana Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 I've seen her live three times. That changes thing.
Thelonious Monk Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Diamanda Galas. Freaky and amazing. My friends run away. she's great. apparently a guy that works at a record store here was drunk after a concert of hers and said he loved her -- she tongue kissed him; he lived to tell the tale.
boomana Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 She's extremely nice in person, and not the persona she puts out there. Still, a little scary. She goes for it. I like it. Stunning vocals. She can split her voice.
boomana Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Yup. Overtones shrieking. You must check her out.
Upstateguy Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Whoa, she's something isn't she..... definitely an acquired taste... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMWR1SesqM0
Dusty Chalk Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 I've seen her live three times. That changes thing.Yeah, I imagine it would -- she strikes me as the sort of musician that one "gets", live.
jinp6301 Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Whoa, she's something isn't she..... definitely an acquired taste... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMWR1SesqM0 i likey!
postjack Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Whoa, she's something isn't she..... definitely an acquired taste... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMWR1SesqM0 x2, this is good.
Salt Peanuts Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 For some reason, most of my friends don't care for them, not sure why, though my best friend does like them.
boomana Posted December 3, 2007 Report Posted December 3, 2007 at least on this album, she kind of scratches the same itch that Tom Waits scratches. I certainly never would have come up with this association on my own, but it makes sense. Both are very soulful in atypical ways. I forgot to mention that she is a pretty impressive all-around musician as well as singer.
ph0rk Posted December 31, 2007 Author Report Posted December 31, 2007 A Diamanda Galas rendition of "I put a spell on you" was mixed into the version of "sex is violent" on the natural born killers soundtrack - very cool (and well done, imho), if you are in to that sort of thing. I think I like that soundtrack more than the movie, actually. ------------------------- More bands people just don't get: The Supersuckers Man... or Astro-Man?
Chekhonte Posted December 31, 2007 Report Posted December 31, 2007 Glenn Branca is a big one for me. I can't play him at all at work with out eliciting a few sighs.
Elephas Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 I like Dead Can Dance. "Sanvean" from the album Wake is one of my favorites. But I also like a lot of other stuff, such as Rihanna's Umbrella song.
