Yeesh, that is going to be an expensive employee.

Not really, but someone who knows how to do all those things isn't going to be good at all of them.

I assumed he wanted them to be decent at them, hence the high salary.

If he's already got a good dba, the coder doesn't need to know as much sql though.

Universities have a supply of young smart people willing to work for little money. There shouldn't be a problem finding the right combination of skills.

Read up on the joys of Peak Oil, our real big fucking problem is a lot closer than most people think. Dealing with its effects will forge the next "greatest generation".

Yep that and fresh water.

wanna bet?? Been looking for over a year now. I could just give in and take the

next piece of trash that shows up, but the people above me would stop it anyway.

Real money is involved as in 75 million a year. Goverment cost accounting standards.

Gets messy if an idiot makes a mess out of everything.

If real money is involved, hire people for each job, instead of trying to get one person who's good at 3 different jobs.

Lol, very true. I'm one of those relatively new developers (graduated Spring 2006) and just learned a few months back to not list every language I've ever learned in school on my resume. =T

Bingo. Also need someone that can do sql all day long.

;) SQL I'm not that versed in.. only a few misc. calls here and there.

Too bad you are too far from me, and I still don't graduate until may.

More than willing to hire 3 people. Its two of the three i can't find.

If you are willing to pay $75k each (cost adjusted from RTP, NC to Illinois), finding a decent coder and decent sql-monkey should be possible, unless there are just tons more geeks in the Triangle area (which is possible).

A few years ago SAS had a job opening on their website for a statistical programmer. No advertising. Over 1000 (good) resumes in 24 hours.

SAS being generally regarded as the best place to work, bar none.

I guess I tend to forget how well they're regarded nationally, I just see them as yet another local employer that treats contractors like crap ;)

That's always how contractors are treated. If they don't treat you like crap, they have to pay you benefits. I still wouldn't be an employee most places.

Yeah, I'm sure I'm just bitter because I totally got sucked in to the waste-your-20's-contracting thing, and have little to show for it save a vitriolic distaste for large bureaucratic companies, even though the academic field isn't really any different in terms of scale or myopia.

I wouldn't really be too broken up inside if the precedent for companies making contractors employees if treated as such de facto was made more... strict? Crap like making employees taking a walk for one month out of twelve to "prove" they aren't real employees just makes things even worse for contractors, not better.

I was the guy that would work whenever, for whatever. I worked hard, and long hours. What'd it get me? Fewer people to help. Less time off. More work. Not significantly more pay. It almost got me divorced, and I got to hear one of my son's first words to me..."bye bye daddy".

Ever heard of "John Galt". You appear to be much like him until he went on strike and took all the knowledge workers with him. John Galt is a character in the novel "Altas Shrugged." This is a great read BYW.
