Icarium Posted October 13, 2007 Author Report Posted October 13, 2007 I haven't put on Qualias at all this week. Been R10ing it up. Probably tomorrow or after I get back from my vacation. I'll do some more detailed shoot offs. It won't really be optimal though since while Qualias sound good with the SDS they really shine on the SS-1. The R10s really sound only so so on the SS-1 but really are amazing with the SDS. Not to mention single ended versus balanced though I do have an adapter.. geh. Keep in mind its not because I don't miss the Qualias.. I do.. I just want to get the R10 sound ingrained in me asap.
Fing Posted October 14, 2007 Report Posted October 14, 2007 When I get any new piece of audio equipment, I often want to play lots of different tracks / types of music to see how it sounds. I don't get that with R10's. I just end up listening to whatever is playing, moreso with my new pair than my old (deteriorated foam rings :'( )
Elephas Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 New pair? Old pair? Can we refer to headphones in the singular, unless talking about two or more? What's with all the "my 650's," "my HD650s," "my K701s" "W5000's," "W5000s?" "My HD650," and "my W5000" sound fine to me, and non-ambiguous. I don't get that with R10's. Does this mean you don't get that with both R10's, or just one R10?
Elephas Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 I think objects should be singular unless composed of two distinct, separate units, like chopsticks. OK, I know this isn't important to everyone, but it has become more relevant to me since I've ended up with 2 units of 4 headphone models.
Salt Peanuts Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 I think objects should be singular unless composed of two distinct, separate units, like chopsticks. Of course, that would make pants and shorts, pant and short. As a non-native English speaker, this (object being plural even though there's only one of that object) used to drive me crazy when I was learning English the first couple of years in US.
Salt Peanuts Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 What are capris classified as I believe they are technically capri shorts, but what do I know?
Elephas Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Sigh, all right, I'll shut up about it. I don't think the R10 is suited for some fast-paced, hard-hitting types of music. It's too reserved. This isn't the same to me as too refined, because both the L3000 and Stax O2 can be exciting and energetic and also refined.
Salt Peanuts Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 I'm sure there are more, but as Reks said, it's 6.30 in the morning and i've been puking on and off since I work up about hour and half ago.
deepak Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 the things in your closet you should throw away, because you're male. Capri 4 lyfe Thats what GQ tells me I like this new singular thingy, Head-Case word lyfe 4 life

Salt Peanuts Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 it's a flu or cold or something. I usually don't have it this bad, but it started on Friday night and it got worse over Saturday, then getting bit better at the end of Sunday. Woke up this morning and took a horrendous turn for the worst. I'm staying home today from work. Going back to bed soon.
Fing Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 To clarify, I should have said - "I don't get the urge to quickly flick through many different types of music when I am listening to it through either pair of my R10 headphones. This is even more pronounced when I am listening to the newer pair than the older pair". My old pair have deteriorated foam rings - the inner one surrounding the driver is almost completely gone and is just flaky red stuff, so I don't get the same kind of sound I am getting out of the new pair I recently acquired. As a result, the old pair is more unfocused and unbalanced in the treble, which can get strident/harsh. Listening to the new pair, which I don't think are broken in yet, the sound is better, more bassy and coherent with better imaging. I will hopefully get some replacement rings at some point soon and be able to make a better comparison, but I feel that once broken in, the difference between the two pairs that I have will be small. Okay? New pair? Old pair? Can we refer to headphones in the singular, unless talking about two or more? What's with all the "my 650's," "my HD650s," "my K701s" "W5000's," "W5000s?" Elephas Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Fing, my little rant wasn't directed at you, it was intended for everybody. I also have two pairs of R10 headphones. I've replaced the earpads on one of them, the one a later serial # and more bass. When I did so, I noticed the foam rings didn't look great, but they were still in reasonably good condition and not crumbling or deteriorated. I expect the other, older pair with less bass to have deteriorated foam rings. I'll try to find some kind of replacement when I have them recabled.

No worries then ) If you manage to get some inner foam rings, please let me know where you got them? Cheers!
Icarium Posted October 15, 2007 Author Report Posted October 15, 2007 I handed my pair and SDS off to foo_me to enjoy while im on vacation.
deepak Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 I handed my pair and SDS off to foo_me to enjoy while im on vacation. Wheres the cool place to vacay nowadays?
deepak Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 well, if you go right after the Death Star II exploded, you can pick up BBQ'ed Ewoks right off the ground. Half that fun has to be in the hunt, they do seem like clever buggers
Icarium Posted October 15, 2007 Author Report Posted October 15, 2007 Eh Hawaii. Not that cool really, but it was cheap so more money to spend on audio gear.
Dusty Chalk Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 Oh... I just put down Massive Attack's - Angel. Lots of bass on this track and I don't want to sound ridiculous but R10s are performing about as well on this track as I remember L3000s performing. Ridiculous! I think I need to hear someone else's R10 setup besides Hirsch's.
purk Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 Ridiculous! I think I need to hear someone else's R10 setup besides Hirsch's. You should. The bassier pair of R10 can have pretty nice bass impact.
riceboy Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 Eh Hawaii. Not that cool really, but it was cheap so more money to spend on audio gear. Hawaii's cool. You could see beautiful girls on the beach and of course visit me
Edwood Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 I have the older "less bass" version. I don't think I can give up even a little bit of soundstage and midrange. -Ed
