grawk Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 I'd say it was average at best, but if it didn't do it for you I wouldn't encourage watching the show. I certainly didn't think it was as bad as you clearly did, but hey, such is life. I wouldn't say it's the worst movie I've ever seen, but it certainly didn't live up to the amount of praise I'd read about both the movie and the series...
philodox Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 No, I really don't think that the movie gives you enough of an idea why people really like the show. That said, if you absolutely hated the movie and have never before liked or watched any of Joss Whedon's previous series... I agree with Nate that Firefly is probably not your thing. Then again, I doubt I would have watched Star Trek: The Next Generation if I saw one of the movies first as they all sucked compared to the series.

What do people see in the series that didn't make it to the surface in the movie? Is it that river is kinda cute, in an emo chick kinda way?
philodox Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 That sounds like more typing than I could handle on my Blackberry. Maybe I'll watch the movie this weekend (haven't seen it in a while) and try to see what I feel is missing. It will be hard to watch it as if I haven't seen the series though as I already really like the characters.
grawk Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 i'm a big fan of Firefly, and i hated Serenity. give the show a chance, grawkie ol' bean. Did you hate the movie because of the key death, or because it was poorly written and acted?
grawk Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 i hated it because it sucked generally. Ok, I guess I'll torrent the first season
philodox Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 Nice. I was going to offer to send it or burn it for you, but downloading is probably easier. I'd say give it four episodes or so and if you aren't pulled in, give up. The first episode is kind of slow, but the first episode that aired (train job) is pretty cool.
grawk Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 I just stuck the dvds on my blockbuster queue. I couldn't find the torrent quickly enough.
grawk Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 I have to say, part of the problem is I absolutely detest the biggest firefly fan I know
philodox Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 Oh, I can understand that. Same reason I haven't caved to the Battlestar Galactica pressure yet.
deepak Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 I guess I sort of ran out of steam with Deadwood. I'm somewhere half way through the first season and the last time I watched it was a couple of weeks ago \

postjack Posted September 26, 2007 Author Report Posted September 26, 2007 I guess I sort of ran out of steam with Deadwood. I'm somewhere half way through the first season and the last time I watched it was a couple of weeks ago \ wow, there is still so much greatness to come. don't worry, I am confident you will carry on.
n_maher Posted September 26, 2007 Report Posted September 26, 2007 :*( Awww Reks, we kid because we love.
grawk Posted September 26, 2007 Report Posted September 26, 2007 you're just a bunch of meanies. And YOU'RE just a weanie
postjack Posted September 26, 2007 Author Report Posted September 26, 2007 hey, i'm not postjack, you have the wrong man! i'm not a weenie, i'm in the cool crowd. i'm pretty tough.
elnero Posted September 27, 2007 Report Posted September 27, 2007 Deadwood is the most brutally violent show I have ever seen. Honestly I can't even think of a movie that is more violent. I kept imaging myself trying to live in a place like that, its almost unthinkable. But like Nate said, the show also makes me laugh my ass off. The characters are just so rich and well developed, and the dialogue is just fantastic. the gleet episode was a toughie. Have you seen the movie Irreversible http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290673/? There are some incredibly brutal scenes in that, not to mention the rape scene is truly disturbing.
elnero Posted September 27, 2007 Report Posted September 27, 2007 Irreversible wasn't that brutal or that disturbing. i also don't think Deadwood is that brutal, but the violence portrayed is definitely very casual. I didn't think Deadwood was that bad either. Irreversible on the other hand... It's been awhile, I just remembering flipping the channel one night and it was on, just before the scene in the bar where the guy gets his face completely bashed in.
elnero Posted September 27, 2007 Report Posted September 27, 2007 well, i can understand that being a bit jarring! And come on now, you have to admit seeing Monica Bellucci getting raped and the crap beat out of her was at least just a weeeee bit disturbing.

elnero Posted September 27, 2007 Report Posted September 27, 2007 i study serial killers for light entertainment on the weekends, i find little to be disturbing, any more. Fair enough.
riceboy Posted September 27, 2007 Report Posted September 27, 2007 No, I haven't seen it, and I probably won't. I don't mind violence, but I can't watch rape. Same here. Don't mind watching the violence, but the rape scenes are a wee bit disturbing.
en480c4 Posted October 3, 2007 Report Posted October 3, 2007 Back on topic... And it doesn't appear to be good news. From the AICN story here... "I just got a call on Friday from ... a dear friend of mine, who told me that they're packing up the ranch," “Deadwood” star Ian McShane tells Cinematical. "They're dismantling the ranch and taking the stuff out. That ship is gonna sail. Bonsoir, Deadwood." Of course, "packing up" and "dismantling" the sets doesn't necessarily mean producers are hacking up the set and selling it for kindling, but McShane does say he wouldn't be available to reprise Al Swearenegen for at least another year. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
