Dusty Chalk
Oh, does Les Claypool doing it live count as animals, too No, because that version sucked.
postjack
Yeah, I have to admit to being underwhelmed by their Remain in Light gig. Their original material I enjoy, but for some reason, don't dig their covers. Same as Gov't Mule. No idea why. Which reminds me: multiple Talking Heads stuff; also, NIN and Tori Amos. Phish did a few gnarly stand alone covers, but I admit I'm not a huge fan of their halloween album-cover shows. White Album was fun though. but they pretty much do the defining version of Roses Are Free, and this is coming from a fan who thinks Ween can do no wrong. EDIT: Also: Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Gary Numan. The trick to the halloween shows (and that dsotm show) is that they were 1 offs, practiced in secret. They were events. Lots of fun to experience. Not groundbreaking. But quadrophenia was good, as was VU loaded. I really enjoyed the cover summer of 98, when they did a ton of different covers. Their version of sabotage was great fun. As for mule's covers, back in the day, they were awesome. Now that mule's a 4 piece, I dunno, I haven't paid attention. But warren haynes is the most talented guitar player alive, imho.

Dusty Chalk
Okay, how about "no, because that was a cover?", even if of a whole album. That would be like me asking of my string quartet tribute version of DSOTM counts as DSOTM. It doesn't. In fact, I would even go so far as to say that Is There Anybody Out There? does not count as The Wall. They (Les Claypool, et al) didn't play the riff right in "Pigs (Three Different Ones)" -- they didn't even bother to play that whole grace note thingy, IIRC (I only listened to it once). On the other hand, Out Of Phase's version of Animals ("Animals 2001") is freakin' inspired. As is the reggae version of DSOTM -- they even matched the beats on that one, so that you could still do the Wizard of Oz thing if you wanted. grawk
We won't get into the whole "didn't play the riff right" thing. Since it wasn't supposed to be a note for note reproduction. Not to mention, they did it for an entire tour, not just 1 show. I will buy the "it's a cover" argument, although I think it was a darn good cover, and I listen to it more often than the original these days. Lots of fun to experience. Yeah, I have to admit, it's a great concept, and if I ever become a big famous rock star, I will probably do something "eventful" like that. Maybe side projects as tribute bands.
