Guest sacd lover Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 How many of you have heard the new 701? I am liking this phone more and more. I think my beloved senn 600's could soon be #2. \ I cant get over how this headphone doesnt seem to have any noticeable flaws. Every phone I have heard to this point has had something I could identify as lacking. The 701 isnt an exciting phone but it just does everything well ..... and its so comfy. What do you think? See you in Cinci. 2
Grand Enigma Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 They are pretty ok... even better balanced ...my one gripe while not really a gripe is that they are not as bassy as the Senns... Im not a bass whore or anything but I do enjoy it a fair amount. u will also see that in cini as well.
ayt999 Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 I haven't yet. someone should send me one to try out. I guess there's going to be a few at the Saratoga meet from what I've been told. I probably should have ordered one when they first came out though.
tiberian Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 it takes forever for todd to ship my k701s...oh well, my lavry still aint here yet and i still have to find a damn driver for my senn, i can wait.
xand1x Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 Can't wait to receive my pair, hopefully bass wont be too much of an issue
Grand Enigma Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 Can't wait to receive my pair, hopefully bass wont be too much of an issue many would say the senns are too bassy ... the K701s are certainly better balanced... and they are no sonys as far as bass goes so no worries there.
ayt999 Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 HD650's are bassy? I think they are average in that department. now I don't know if I'll like the K701's, I like my cans bassy.
Post Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 1911 likes the ones he got from Todd so much, he just sold his RS-1 (a really nice pair!) and HD650 (5 hours use, bah!) can you believe it?
tiberian Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 650s are not bassy at all...its just that they sound so bloated most of the time.
Grand Enigma Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 650s are not bassy at all...its just that they sound so bloated most of the time. I was not talking impact or such they just have a very emphasized bottom end... the 701s are a lot more balanced in the regard and do not sound muddy or bloated.

I think part of the problem is you are using HD650's unbalanced, and I'm going with a balanced HD650 sound, which IMO sounds a lot different.

Is that speaking of them balanced out of the SDS-XLR, or just out of any balanced amp? I remember them sounding a bit bloated running them single ended.

I remember them sounding a bit bloated running them single ended. moreso the SDS-XLR (or Dynamight, although I like the SDS-XLR better), but other balanced amplifiers like the BlockHead and Balanced Reference aren't bad and control the headphone better. going single-ended to a BlockHead / Balanced Reference is a nice jump, and going from a balanced amp in their range to a SDS-XLR / Dynamight is another similar increase in performance, or perhaps more. and for reference, driving HD650's out of a variable balanced line output straight from a DAC or other source is still around the performance level of driving them single-ended from what I've experienced. just so people don't confuse this with the single-ended versus balanced amp comparison I made above.
tiberian Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 they do sound bloated out of anything but gilmore and meier amps. but when balanced...OMG the bass rocks my little world.

I remember them sounding a bit bloated running them single ended. I was talking single-ended for the common folk....the bloat is much of the reason why i like the 600s better single ended.

See you in Cinci. how do you find this headphone compared the the hp-series phones? The reason I ask is so that I can guage an idea on how they sound. I have not heard them myself.
acs236 Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 I'm going to the Cinci meet on Saturday with very high expectations regarding the AKG 701. I like my current headphone options very much, so it is going to have to sound really special for me to jump. If it does, then I almost certainly will order a pair from Todd. I really like the 501s, so if the 701 cures their slight deficiencies, I'm in. I like the comments I'm hearing. The Senn 650 were a little too bassy for me; the Ps-1s a bit more bassy. My only question is if I will like them enough, as compared to the RS-1, SA5K, or CD3K, to justify another high end headphone. And the fact that sacd lover likes them so much probably means they're not bright enough!
acs236 Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 Your modded CD3Ks?! Really?! If I recall correctly, my woody-modded and recabled CD3Ks sent him into nearly instant shrieks of pain. What is this, Bizzaro world?
philodox Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 Can't wait to hear grandenigma's old set once xand1x gets his hands on them. We need to get a balanced amp so that we can compare them to my K340's as they were 'meant to be heard'.
PATB Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 Anybody heard the K701 in balanced mode?
Grand Enigma Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 Anybody heard the K701 in balanced mode? Tkam and I have
PATB Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 Tkam and I have Well, does it transform to a monster of a headphone like the HD650? Or does it sound pretty much the same?
PFKMan23 Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 Hmm... Well I was thinking about getting a 600, so maybe instead I'll use my 701s to fill the void.
