jpelg Posted August 24, 2021 Report Posted August 24, 2021 Nora from Queens - Awkwafina is raw, but in a so very relatable way, in this comedy series set in Flushing, not far from where I lived. Lori Tan Chinn is a hoot as her grandmother. BD Wong brings his usual high-level in the most subtle of ways as her dad. Easy watch, recommended. 1
swt61 Posted August 24, 2021 Report Posted August 24, 2021 Just started Nine Perfect Strangers. Watched the three episodes available. The jury is still out. Contemplating Chappelwaite. Based off of a Stephen King story, so worth a look.
Dusty Chalk Posted August 24, 2021 Report Posted August 24, 2021 Finally finished Queen's Gambit -- very excellent, thoroughly enjoyed. Hard to believe it was entirely fiction, her story felt so authentic, down to the unrelated details (her love of clothes and high fashion) and the seeming autism that is never mentioned directly, only portrayed. 4
Dusty Chalk Posted August 25, 2021 Report Posted August 25, 2021 The Prisoner -- I probably shouldn't watch this show, I'm paranoid enough already. 1
jpelg Posted August 29, 2021 Report Posted August 29, 2021 The Chair (Netflix) - good to see Sandra Oh in something after Killing Eve. An enjoyable watch, even if it is pretty predictable, feeling like I've seen these characters before, just in a different context or something. Good supporting cast, including Bob Balaban & Holland Taylor, among others, to round out the ensemble. A very nice, eclectic soundtrack is notable. Only six eps, so... 2
blessingx Posted August 29, 2021 Report Posted August 29, 2021 Somehow I've never heard of Outsiders and watched the pilot. Anyone seen? I admire their ruthless focus on realism of late era Viking history.

But a lot of colleagues have watched it and say it paints a hauntingly accurate picture of academia. I get enough of that shit on a day-to-day basis for it to bleed into my entertainment as well! 1 1
Knuckledragger Posted August 29, 2021 Report Posted August 29, 2021 Since I pay for the Bozos Space Fund, I have access to AMZN Prime Video and sometimes avail myself of it. I watched a documentary on the late Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones a few nights ago. Prime Video's suggestion algorithm is hilarious, especially compared to the "we track your every move" nature of YouTube and Google. It suggested season 4 of The Grand Tour, which is the, ahem, spiritual successor to Top Gear. In spite of the fact that I find Jeremy Clarkson to be one of the most loathsome people in the history of humans (or things that are loathsome) I watched the first episode. It's quite well produced as one would expect. Apparently Prime has the first for seasons. 1

Aside from the first season being a bit hit or miss, The Grand Tour is a pretty great continuation of the sort of thing people who watched them on Top Gear enjoyed. Clarkson may not be the best person around (to put it mildly), but the three of them have such a perfect chemistry together.
mikeymad Posted August 31, 2021 Report Posted August 31, 2021 First three episodes. Martin and Short, what is not to like? 2

mikeymad Posted August 31, 2021 Report Posted August 31, 2021 He is almost 90 - so I gave him a break for not coming out of retirement. But it does have Sting and Tina Fey.
Fitz Posted August 31, 2021 Report Posted August 31, 2021 (edited) You had me at Sting. Edit: Sting was literally one of my first crushes on a man. Edited August 31, 2021 by Fitz 1
Pars Posted September 1, 2021 Report Posted September 1, 2021 Been watching the series version of Hanna. With Miriele Enos and Joel Kinnaman from The Killing, etc. Pretty good so far. Kind of followed the movie somewhat the first 3 or 4 episodes some. I'm enjoying it, but I also liked the movie. 2
jpelg Posted September 8, 2021 Report Posted September 8, 2021 Succession (HBO) - binging on our new guilty pleasure. If Dallas had been made today, this is what it would be. This family be cray-cray, and I can't look away. Season 3 coming soon. 3

swt61 Posted September 8, 2021 Report Posted September 8, 2021 I'll see your semi naked Sting and raise you a semi naked Sean Connery. 1
blessingx Posted September 9, 2021 Report Posted September 9, 2021 Something tells me we're three steps from Burt Reynolds.

Voltron Posted September 9, 2021 Report Posted September 9, 2021 (edited) Back on topic: Guilty on PBS Masterpiece. It's Scottish, so it's not crap! Recommended. Edited September 9, 2021 by Voltron 1 1
Dusty Chalk Posted September 9, 2021 Report Posted September 9, 2021 Post-Mortem: No-one Dies in Skarnes Norwegian Morbid Comedy/Horror, only first episode so far, but very entertaining Haven't heard any black metal yet, but thematically, I probably should've guessed it was Norwegian
Dusty Chalk Posted September 11, 2021 Report Posted September 11, 2021 Also, What We Do in the Shadows, season 3.
jpelg Posted September 17, 2021 Report Posted September 17, 2021 Billions (Showtime) - continuing our exploration into how the one-percenters live/work. Just finished season 1 - crazy fun stuff. Hopefully can get through s2-5 before Succession starts back up next month.
