I can't vouch for the rest of the show, but the first episode is off to a very promising start. Been looking forward to this one. As a former tournament chess player, I'm always on the lookout for films about the sport that don't make me cringe. I've heard good things about the soundtrack too. 2
velomane Posted October 26, 2020 Report Posted October 26, 2020 Which chess films would you recommend?
ironbut Posted October 26, 2020 Report Posted October 26, 2020 Searching for Bobby Fisher and Night Moves (with Gene Hackman) off the top of my head. Both mention historically/theoretically important games. Not just the stuff you see on the back pages of newspapers on a bad news day. 3
Dusty Chalk Posted October 29, 2020 Report Posted October 29, 2020 Donnie Darko with some imaginary friends. Was watching Devin Townsend the last two nights -- another crazy great performer who is both virtuosic and enjoys what he does.
ironbut Posted October 29, 2020 Report Posted October 29, 2020 Finished the Netflix limited series Queen's Gambit mentioned above. Loved it (not perfect but it got me to pull out some of my fav chess books and dream about my adventures and comrades in the game). Here's a bit of nice analysis by GM Ginger Williams. Warning,.. this is full of spoilers!!!! 1 1
TMoney Posted October 29, 2020 Report Posted October 29, 2020 I'm through three episodes but I decided to put it on pause for now and read the book. 3
Dusty Chalk Posted October 30, 2020 Report Posted October 30, 2020 Currently: ...which is all kinds of wonderful. She started out by playing St. James Infirmary, something I've been listening to a lot, lately, and is currently playing a version of Time in a Bottle.
ironbut Posted October 31, 2020 Report Posted October 31, 2020 As a lifelong fan of both these guys, I'll be re visiting this movie tonight. 3

Voltron Posted November 1, 2020 Report Posted November 1, 2020 That's a good one. I thought about A Bridge Too Far but it's too big of a cast. Now thinking of this: 6
Dusty Chalk Posted November 1, 2020 Report Posted November 1, 2020 Continuing Festival of Ghouls: Standouts: Flummox at 5:02:00 (crazy talented Zappa-esque 6-piece) You Bred Raptors? at 6:16:25 (cello, 8-string bassist, and drummer) Fable Cry at 6:57:00 (dark cabaret with a full vampire and murder story in the video) ...plus I won a really delightful almost black-cat-looking poster right before Flummox.
blessingx Posted November 2, 2020 Report Posted November 2, 2020 As always playing catch-up. Just finished season two of The Boys (Prime). Maybe a bit on the nose at times, but is anything else in popular culture addressing the current state of America this directly? Season three sounds like it’s going to be plenty interesting. 1
Voltron Posted November 2, 2020 Report Posted November 2, 2020 I tired of season one But I guess I need to watch season two. 1
skullguise Posted November 2, 2020 Report Posted November 2, 2020 Karen and I watched Overboard (original one), she had never seen it. Then we watched The Way I see It. I was practically sobbing for the Sandy Hook piece of the story. I fucking miss that kind of leadership! 1 1

ironbut Posted November 15, 2020 Report Posted November 15, 2020 Enjoyed this one and can't wait for the next season. 1

Dusty Chalk Posted November 21, 2020 Report Posted November 21, 2020 Saturday afternoon lazy jazzy grooviness and space and psychedelia Istanbul Psychedelic | EFG London Jazz Festival 2020 EFG London Jazz Festival is delighted to present Istanbul Sounds, featuring three unique names from different generations of alternative Turkish music, welcoming audiences from Istanbul’s historical sites; psychedelia legends Baba ZuLa and Moğollar, Ilhan Ersahin's Istanbul Sessions, and Montreux Jazz Award winner Islandman. By mixing oriental instruments such as the darbuka, electric saz, and spoons with electronics and modern sounds, BaBa ZuLa creates a sound all their own called Istanbul psychedelia. While a ney can represent the past Sufi-Islamic tradition, and a clarinet is the symbol of the music of the Turkish gypsies - an electric saz together with a wooden spoon can serve as musical compass to Turkish musical roots going as far back as pre-Islamic, shamanic times, through Anatolia reaches all the way up to present-day Istanbul. Their forthcoming new album 'Hayvan Gibi' will be released on Night Dreamer later this year. Islandman provide a unique mix of mellow electronic dance beats with spacey live guitars, backed up with shamanic rhythms. After giving successful performances at festivals such as Cappadox, Sunbeat Festival, Apple Flower Festival, Istanbul Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival and Boom Festival, the trio continue their stratospheric rise, with an Anatolian tradition of fusing the music of the world with its own. Ilhan Ersahin presents his Istanbul Sessions during the performance - an instrumental and organic jazz, rock and dance group with exceptional musicianship and party vibe to get you up on your feet. This will be their first 'live' appearance after the release of their new album Bir Zamanlar Şimdi is released on Friday 13 November through Nublu Records. Headlining the evening are pioneers Moğollar bringing their psych folk rock. Leading the way since the late '60s, they bring multi-layered and polyphonic mix rich in technicality and folklore. Their music paved the way for the psychedelic Turkish music scene, retaining their monolith stature to this day. This year, they recorded their 12th studio album direct-to-disc with England's Night Dreamer Records using all vintage equipment, continuing their reign as revolutionary Anadolu Pop leaders This concert is kindly supported by İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s İstanbul Kültür Ofisi Istanbul Psychedelic | EFG London Jazz Festival 2020 EFG London Jazz Festival is delighted to present Istanbul Sounds, featuring three unique names from different generations of alternative Turkish music, welcoming audiences from Istanbul’s historical sites; psychedelia legends Baba ZuLa and Moğollar, Ilhan Ersahin's Istanbul Sessions, and Montreux Jazz Award winner Islandman. HiWire Posted November 22, 2020 Report Posted November 22, 2020 Walkman hacks (no soldering)... for a player I don't own: 1
Dusty Chalk Posted November 22, 2020 Report Posted November 22, 2020 Definitely going to have to look into that for my Walkman.
ironbut Posted November 22, 2020 Report Posted November 22, 2020 (edited) Speaking of Walkman,.. I've started watching The Crown season 4 and a scene with Dianna in Buckingham Palace rollerskating listening to her Walkman really brought back some personal memories of those times. My ex-wife Gael worked at a coffeehouse and she'd skate with Elvis Costello on her Walkman in the parking lot after closing. She too was achingly beautiful and it was a pleasure to just stand there and watch! Edited November 22, 2020 by ironbut 6
blessingx Posted November 23, 2020 Report Posted November 23, 2020 Thanks for sharing. Add me to the Queen's Gambit fan group. 2
Grahame Posted November 23, 2020 Report Posted November 23, 2020 Hmm, Roller Skates and Walkmans? If you are of a certain age and fron the UK, that can only mean one thing really ... "It features Richard walking around and on rollerskates, while listening to music on a Walkman cassette player; such devices were then newly available in the UK.[12]" https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wired_for_Sound 1
