Voltron Posted October 24, 2015 Report Posted October 24, 2015 Are there a lot of other people there with you, or have you all fasted for days? Mike's BBQ does look fantastic.
grawk Posted October 24, 2015 Report Posted October 24, 2015 short version: went on a buddhist retreat last weekend. Haven't had meat since. I'm sure I will again, just not right now? 4
Voltron Posted October 25, 2015 Report Posted October 25, 2015 Sorry, Dan, my post was about the gluttonous carnivores in SoFla, not your monastic meal. I thought you have the inside scoop on why they cooked a pig, a cow and a salmon. Namaste.
jvlgato Posted October 25, 2015 Report Posted October 25, 2015 short version: went on a buddhist retreat last weekend. Haven't had meat since. I'm sure I will again, just not right now? That sounds interesting. I just signed up for a study on Trascendental Meditation with our academic affiliate next door. They plan on teaching doctors TM to see if it can reduce burnout and improve quality of life. Funny thing is, I may not qualify for the study, because I don't have the required 1 1/2 hours free time in each of the four days needed to get the orientation to the TM class. Oh well.
grawk Posted October 25, 2015 Report Posted October 25, 2015 Check this place out if you're interested:http://www.lakesidebuddha.org I'm having some steel cut oatmeal with craisins for breakfast. Woo, exciting 3
jvlgato Posted October 26, 2015 Report Posted October 26, 2015 Cool! I like Thich Nhat Hanh. Read a bunch of his books, saw him give a lecture once. Though I couldn't hear a word he said, since he was so soft spoken, and the large hall wasn't properly amplified. Were you up here, though? We should've given you a proper HC Chicago visit! Though admittedly, our usual HC visits are not very meditative. Well, I guess they are, but not in that way. Eh, I probably couldn't have gotten away from kid activities and work this weekend, any way, so I shouldn't even talk. But I hope you had a great visit! That was my old 'hood from my college days! Edit: Looks like it was in WI. That looks like something Anne would have liked! Thanks, I'll have to tell her about that. Maybe if they do that some time again in the future. Did you have a good experience?Edit2: Dodgeville looks very close to where we spent a late anniversary weekend a few weekends ago. Nice area! I hope you were able to drive through New Glarus for some sausage and beer!
grawk Posted October 26, 2015 Report Posted October 26, 2015 No I wasn't there, I was suggesting it as something close to you where you could do mindfulness on your own schedule TNH's sanghas are way less stringent than most other variants, from what I can tell. 1
Grahame Posted October 26, 2015 Report Posted October 26, 2015 Thanks to an off-site employee being on-site today,ThisFrom here 1
Augsburger Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 Delicious Colin! I am guessing you weigh about 320 pounds now.
Dusty Chalk Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 When I die, I want to be reincarnated as Colin's metabolism. It's just not right. 1
swt61 Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 He doesn't have a high metabolism, he spends 6 hours a day in Jazzercise class...
grawk Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 I had a refried bean and tempeh burrito. With enough spice, it's not bad. I found myself temped by the ground turkey my family was eating tho. 1
cetoole Posted October 28, 2015 Report Posted October 28, 2015 I'd think ground turkey is about as bland as tempeh. Down about 8lbs from MOA. Clean living and all. 1
shellylh Posted October 28, 2015 Report Posted October 28, 2015 Had beef ribs, creamed corn, and mac & cheese, at Killen's Barbeque for lunch. It was delicious but I ate it all before I could take a picture. 4

cetoole Posted October 29, 2015 Report Posted October 29, 2015 Shelly, that looks amazing. Another successful day. 3
jvlgato Posted October 30, 2015 Report Posted October 30, 2015 Damn, is this a food trip? What a great trip you're having!
Dusty Chalk Posted October 30, 2015 Report Posted October 30, 2015 (edited) When I die, I want to be reincarnated as Colin's metabolism. It's just not right....and constitution. I've been trying different tomatillos ever since that burrito in San Fran, and all of the ones I've tried so far have been upsetting mah stomach, although that one didn't at all. Need to figure out which ingredient is doing this to me.Geezin' fucking sucks, man. Edited October 30, 2015 by Dusty Chalk
cetoole Posted October 30, 2015 Report Posted October 30, 2015 (edited) Damn, is this a food trip? What a great trip you're having! The general plan is walk around and see as much as possible, and same for food. The food is easier to get photographs of which show what I'm feeling, rather than a snapshot of the city. I envy people like Peter and Jeff who have the skill to take amazing photos that convey the emotion of a location. Edited October 30, 2015 by cetoole 4
Dusty Chalk Posted October 30, 2015 Report Posted October 30, 2015 (edited) Fish sandwich and clam chowder at Fado. They have a pretty nice whiskey selection, and a few gins I haven't tried, will have to go back when I can drink and aren't driving right away. #firstworldproblems Edited October 30, 2015 by Dusty Chalk
