n_maher Posted April 11, 2013 Report Posted April 11, 2013 Strikes me way too much like a Timex Indiglo watch.
agile_one Posted April 11, 2013 Report Posted April 11, 2013 New arrival: Nice, Mike. Approved. Strikes me way too much like a Timex Indiglo watch. NTTIAWWT
Hopstretch Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 Let's see it on your wrist, Tall Man! Have to wait until the next trip to the States!
Cee Tee Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 Forgive me for posting a Bauhaus "homage" a la Nomos/Stowa, but I am really enjoying this Rodina at ~$120 and not cringing when I bump into something. Surprised at the quality and detail so far:
HeadphoneAddict Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 I'm partial to the Citizen Eco-Drive Diver as an homage to the Submariner with an added bonus of the phallic minute and hour hands. I'm still trying to figure out how they open the watch from the front to service it, since the case is a one-piece unit with a screw down crown and no removable back. It shouldn't need much servicing since the solar-charged battery lasts over 20 years, but I suppose the gasket around the screw down crown can wear out every few years. The SS bracelet is a low-cost replacement for the rubber strap that came with it, and the watch shop had just the right parts for matching the band to the watch. I think it turned out perfect with the bracelet. My son will use the Victorinox Dive Master 500 when he goes scuba diving again. The luminous hands are very bright with both watches after just a 15 second charge with a flashlight (or just sunlight for a few minutes) although the Citizen glows a little brighter. But he's less likely to scratch the sapphire crystal on the Dive Master, and leaving the rubber strap means it will fit him with or without a wetsuit. He wanted a Citizen WR200 dive watch (Scuba Fin model) but I think this will make a better reward for finishing up his work toward Eagle Scout this summer.
CarlSeibert Posted May 22, 2013 Report Posted May 22, 2013 I don't think Nomos still makes that model. It was my favorite. Is the Rodina Russian?
Cee Tee Posted May 23, 2013 Report Posted May 23, 2013 ^Chinese and surprisingly well-done with a Sea-Gull ST17 movement.
CarlSeibert Posted May 26, 2013 Report Posted May 26, 2013 Interesting. Rodina was a brand of - I'm fuzzy on this - either the first or second Moscow watch factory back in the day. I want to say the watch Gaugarin really wore - the one with the cheesy twisty band- was branded Rodina. Or maybe it was the export brand, I forget.
CarlSeibert Posted May 26, 2013 Report Posted May 26, 2013 Answering my own question.....Yup. And no, mine it's not THE watch )
Hopstretch Posted May 26, 2013 Report Posted May 26, 2013 (edited) How does the Casemind feel about this Carrera 1887 as a light-faced watch on a brown band in a reasonable size (41mm)? A (rather more expensive) alternative would be something like a 40mm El Primero and then change out the strap. Edited May 26, 2013 by Hopstretch
Torpedo Posted May 26, 2013 Report Posted May 26, 2013 I'm partial to El Primero, I love their movement, but aesthetically kind of like the Carrera better.
agile_one Posted May 26, 2013 Report Posted May 26, 2013 I know nothing of the movements, but by looks alone, the Carrera wins handsomely.
guzziguy Posted May 26, 2013 Report Posted May 26, 2013 I'm not partial to chronographs, but I prefer the look of the El Primero. Probably you should get the one you really like.
Dreadhead Posted May 26, 2013 Report Posted May 26, 2013 I love my El Primero. No one knows how much it is worth this side of the pond and it let's me run under the radar.
Torpedo Posted May 26, 2013 Report Posted May 26, 2013 Yeah, very few people know that for a good bunch of years the movement into the Rolex Daytona was a Zenith El Primero, until Zenith decided to keep their movements for their own use. Great watches, but liking their designs or not is very personal, as Ken says.
