I see what you did there.https://www.thewatchforum.co.uk/index.php?/topic/47037-what-is-the-collective-noun-for-watches/ Funny! I really do have too many watches, though. I don't have enough watches.
Hopstretch Posted September 12, 2018 Report Posted September 12, 2018 Ha! I forgot to post this before, too, a curiosity. My great-grandfather's Baume Brothers watch. Plated, nothing special, well before the union with Mercier in 1918 -- I would guess late 19th Century based on his age and life story. Went to my grandfather, who reputedly wore it daily, then my Dad, who left it in a drawer since the '60s. Dial is in rough shape as you see, but I had the movement repaired and put a new strap on. It runs OK and my wife now wears it occasionally, for it is teeny tiny by modern standards, maybe 31 - 32 mm. I like having it anyway, feels like a (literal) time capsule from the ancestors! 4
EdipisReks1 Posted September 12, 2018 Report Posted September 12, 2018 That is badass! Unexpected familial watches are... fun isn't the right word. Important.
EdipisReks1 Posted September 12, 2018 Report Posted September 12, 2018 You know, the Santos is so good that I think I could just wear it for the rest of my life. Cartier knocked it out of the park.
Rossliew Posted September 12, 2018 Report Posted September 12, 2018 I noticed you guys prefer watches with clean dials and simple designs. May i ask which areas of the Santos that makes you so happy with it?

Even the flaws are charming (for instance, it is a bit of a slab-sided watch, but at only 9mm, with a break in the side due to the bezel, it looks nice). The dial is about as simple as it gets: square matte silver with no guilloche, and a simply braced date.
Rossliew Posted September 12, 2018 Report Posted September 12, 2018 You should be a time piece reviewer. You make me want to get a Cartier myself! I'm looking for a nice time piece myself but can't quite firm up a choice. Maybe a higher end Seiko (Marinemaster) or a simple G Shock
luvdunhill Posted September 14, 2018 Report Posted September 14, 2018 I purchased one of these today! Looking for a strap or two recommendations, something easier to adjust on the fly compared to a bracelet and makes the red pop on the face 1

luvdunhill Posted September 15, 2018 Report Posted September 15, 2018 Nice! Want me to put you in touch with my strap maker? Was thinking about a Cincy Straps, Goldfinger-era Bond, with that bit of red. Thoughts? 1

Get your mind out of the gutter: my strap maker only makes the finest strap-on straps for the most elegant perverts. Anyway, Jan can make you anything you want, Marc, and the quality is superb and the prices reasonable. PM me your email.
luvdunhill Posted September 20, 2018 Report Posted September 20, 2018 I am really enjoying this one. It doesn’t feel too big. Only gripe is the date is a bit recessed, but probably due to the extra GMT complication? 3
EdipisReks1 Posted September 20, 2018 Report Posted September 20, 2018 It’s very likely that is the reason if it’s a modular movement. It’s a good looking watch!

Have been wanting a Speedy for a long time. The FOIS scratches the itch given the sub-40mm size, but the strap does nothing for me. So I'm thinking a brown alligator strap with an Omega deployment buckle would be what tips me over the edge. Can your man make something like this? https://www.jean-rousseau.com/shop/watch-strap-alligator-3-5-vintage-brown/7809-alligator-vintage-brown This is the idea, but not the purple so much... HS
EdipisReks1 Posted September 20, 2018 Report Posted September 20, 2018 Yes, the problem would be sourcing the alligator hide (it's not easy, and definitely not cheap, to get it in small quantities and high enough quality for artisan work). It wouldn't be any cheaper than that Rousseau strap, FYI.

I very much like the idea of an Omega deployment strap on a brown/cognac alligator strap on that Speedy. It's going to happen... HS
EdipisReks1 Posted September 21, 2018 Report Posted September 21, 2018 Honestly, as much as I like Jan's work, I'd buy that strap you linked, if it is the right length, and the appropriately sized deployant buckle. Omega makes both 16mm and 18mm, so it should be easy enough to source one. I really prefer pin buckles, but I totally understand why you want that combo. 1
luvdunhill Posted September 21, 2018 Report Posted September 21, 2018 Here’s the strap I bought, it’s alright - not Omega strap quality - the holes look like they will easily fray (the Omega seem to be burned through), which if I could rectify would be good enough. 2
SeaWolf Posted September 21, 2018 Report Posted September 21, 2018 always a fan of functional materials like nylon, plus the 'just so' adjustment of a nato! I just put really nice silicone strap on my panerai; I popped the stupid spring loaded pins out of the new strap and I am using the stock lug screws, as that is much more secure. I have the stock alligator strap with the panerai deployment and a really nice strap with a buckle that is made of vintage leather from Dangerous9. I am back to this as my daily driver and needed the new strap because neither of the other two stand up to blood and water very well. The market is out of control and I had an offer on my DSSD I couldn't say no too so panerai has been promoted up from the reserves. 3
SeaWolf Posted October 5, 2018 Report Posted October 5, 2018 (edited) Well I was expecting to be down to my Panerai and g shock for some time while assessing exactly what I wanted next. But the wife continues to be a bad influence in my life. She saw me checking out pics of this and decided it has a nice look, not entirely pleased that my watch dealer ignored my standing order not to let her buy me anything. Either way, quite pleased with the piece and he always comes through on the pricing. Normally not a fan of two tone yellow gold but the way it's used here is quite understated. SeaWolf Posted October 6, 2018 Report Posted October 6, 2018 Thx, I am a big fan of everything they have done for this year on the watch. Here is a gratuitous lume shot with my BHSE in the background. 1
