dsavitsk Posted June 23, 2020 Report Posted June 23, 2020 Is it possible that there is not a dedicated podcast thread yet? https://crooked.com/podcast-series/wind-of-change/ It’s 1990. The Berlin Wall has just come down. The Soviet Union is on the verge of collapse. A heavy metal band from West Germany, the Scorpions, releases a power ballad, “Wind of Change.” The song becomes the soundtrack to the peaceful revolution sweeping Europe — and one of the biggest rock singles ever. According to some fans, it’s the song that ended the Cold War. Decades later, New Yorker writer Patrick Radden Keefe hears a rumor from a source: the Scorpions didn’t actually write “Wind of Change.” The CIA did... 3
n_maher Posted June 23, 2020 Report Posted June 23, 2020 Good idea for a thread. I'll be listening to the one that you posted. One of my favorites - https://www.hdtgminfo.com/ Quote Have you ever seen a movie so bad that it’s amazing? Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael and Jason Mantzoukas want to hear about it! We’ll watch it with our funniest friends, and report back to you with the results. 1
tyrion Posted June 23, 2020 Report Posted June 23, 2020 If you are into history, I highly recommend. His series on WW1 is great. https://www.dancarlin.com 1
TMoney Posted June 24, 2020 Report Posted June 24, 2020 (edited) I've enjoyed Michael Lewis' Against the Rules podcast the past two seasons. If you enjoy Michael's written work, you'll be right at home. First season was on the role of referees in American society, the second season was on the role of coaches. https://atrpodcast.com/ Edited June 24, 2020 by TMoney
mikeymad Posted June 25, 2020 Report Posted June 25, 2020 There are more.. There are 900 files in my queue. I do not recommend this strategy. 1 1
blessingx Posted June 25, 2020 Report Posted June 25, 2020 I lately alternate between Making Sense and WTF. That way I can laugh and cry. The Times recently had an article Podcasts for the Pandemic Era. Attaching. Podcasts for the Pandemic Era - The New York Times.pdf
blessingx Posted August 3, 2020 Report Posted August 3, 2020 The New York Times and Serial (thus This American Life) has released Nice White Parents. Seems lots of controversy already, but the TAL breakout segment was great. https://twitter.com/serial/status/1286322428109438976?s=20
Sherwood Posted September 13, 2020 Report Posted September 13, 2020 I just listened to the first episode of “Winds of Change”,@dsavitsk, and I’m hooked. His description of information security runs very close to my experience working in highly classified spaces — there is no “all access pass” to the good stuff. Lots of times the people who know the good stuff have no idea how good it is. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1
VPI Posted September 16, 2020 Report Posted September 16, 2020 I am pleased to announce that the life changing podcast you have all been waiting for is slowly going public. Only the trailer is up so far and only on Spotify, but they are coming. Prepare for enlightenment 3
Grahame Posted September 16, 2020 Report Posted September 16, 2020 * Cheery upbeat background music * * Friendly reassuring voice * "And in this week's podcast we discuss planning for dystopian events in your neighborhood." 1

dsavitsk Posted December 26, 2020 Author Report Posted December 26, 2020 This probably renders this thread obsolete, but here's the Atlantic's list of best podcasts https://www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2020/12/50-best-podcasts-2020/617486/ 2 1
dsavitsk Posted July 14, 2021 Author Report Posted July 14, 2021 The Vanishing of Harry Pace: https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/radiolab/projects/vanishing-harry-pace Quote It was Motown before Motown, FUBU before FUBU: Black Swan Records. The label founded 100 years ago by Harry Pace. Pace launched the career of Ethel Waters, inadvertently invented the term rock n roll, played an important role in W.C. Handy becoming "Father of the Blues," inspired Ebony and Jet magazines, and helped desegregate the South Side of Chicago in an epic Supreme Court battle. Then, he disappeared. The Vanishing of Harry Pace is a series about the phenomenal but forgotten man who changed America. It's a story about betrayal, family, hidden identities, and a time like no other. https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2021/jul/14/an-american-riddle-the-black-music-trailblazer-who-died-white-harry-pace 2 3
n_maher Posted July 14, 2021 Report Posted July 14, 2021 ^^ Been listening to that as well. Excellent as usual and sad all at the same time. The older I get the more embarrassed I am. 1
blessingx Posted August 8, 2021 Report Posted August 8, 2021 Listening to Sam Harris & Ricky Gervais paid podcast Absolutely Mental. Fun BSing around and about big subjects. https://absolutelymental.com/
Dusty Chalk Posted August 8, 2021 Report Posted August 8, 2021 I've actually been listening to more podcasts in the car, because it takes too much attention to listen while I work or while I study, which seems to be 100% of my waking life these days. ...are my two favourites/most frequently listened. I've also listened to a couple of these -- I think they're at their best when Rachel joins them (Animals, Tales of Mystery and Imagination by Edgar Allan Poe), but they're even enjoyable when they do albums they don't like (Blackwater Park😞 https://prognotespodcast.com/ A couple I'm intending to listen: I'll definitely give that Ricky Gervais one a listen... 1
dsavitsk Posted August 26, 2021 Author Report Posted August 26, 2021 I don't know how much interest this will have here, but if you are interested in law and/or policy discussions, the Lawfare Podcast is generally highly recommended. Sadly, the best podcast out of Lawfare just ended because two of the three commentators went to work for the Biden administration. That said, this recent episode on the police state in Xinjiang and the treatment of the Uyghurs there, and elsewhere, is interesting, horrible, and terrifying. Definitely worth a listen. 3
TMoney Posted August 26, 2021 Report Posted August 26, 2021 (edited) Another fun legal-ish one to follow is John Carryrou's Bad Blood podcast. He is the reporter who broke the stories in the WSJ that took out Theranos, and subsequently wrote a book about it. He is going to be following the day to day of the trail (at which he himself may be called to testify) which kicks off next week. It should be interesting, to say the least! First two episodes came out last night so this is hot off the press. Edited August 26, 2021 by TMoney 2

dsavitsk Posted December 29, 2021 Author Report Posted December 29, 2021 The Lazarus Heist “Almost a perfect crime.” The hacking ring and an attempt to steal a billion dollars. Investigators blame North Korea. Pyongyang denies involvement. The story begins in Hollywood. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w13xtvg9/episodes/downloads And an interesting discussion with the creators: https://www.lawfareblog.com/lawfare-podcast-lazarus-heist-jean-lee-and-geoff-white 2

blessingx Posted February 25, 2022 Report Posted February 25, 2022 If anyone is a fan of Jon Ronson (Them: Adventures with Extremists, The Men Who Stare at Goats, The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry), he's got a pretty interesting, compassionate, easy-to-digest BBC4 podcast, called Things Fell Apart, about specific origins in the Culture Wars. I'm sure everyone will have a different favorite, but the collision of second wave feminism with third wave might be mine. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/things-fell-apart/id1592984136?i=1000540367923 https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0011cpr/episodes/player A sample segment of one episode... 1
