Just bought an iPhone only to find out that this thing won't except my etymotic ER-6 headphones or my Ultimate Ears Pro 5's. This is very disappointing! I have $450.00 worth of headphones I can't use with my state of the art iPhone! This thing is going back!

What is it, a 2.5mm jack? I think that's standard on phones

Apparently it has four conductors just like the typical phone connector but is 3.5mm in size. But yes, I've never seen a phone with a standard headphone socket so this isn't especially different.

Annoying to be sure. I picked up an adapter from ebay to use with mine. Can't recall the guys handle at the moment but a search should provide some results. If you can't find one, drop me a PM here and I'll see if I can go back through my records and find it. It's a cheap little thing, and I wasn't particularly thrilled with the sonics from my phone so I never use it. Still, in a pinch, I felt like having something so I picked up the adapter. Still, it'a pain to be forced to carry yet another piece of hardware when you travel. Sorry about the surprise from Apple, but as other pointed out, it's not much of a secret.

Apparently the problem is the skinny jack. Because ibuds have those skinny stems. So all you really need is any skinny mini male connector to adapt to the jack. Or you can google "iphone headphone adapter" and have one for $6.

how is the sound on the iphone?

I've not heard sound out of the iPhone but apparently it has the same Wolfson DAC that's in the 5th generation iPods. These aren't bad DACs but they in the iPods they tend to be let down by the amp circuitry.
