guzziguy
I give you 1.3 weeks. Longer. He'll love the sound of this so much that he'll hold onto it for 3 or 4 months. I mean he'll really love it.
tyrion
We should start a pool. You would have to set it up in a thread that I can't see so I am not influenced by the positions taken by those participating. I don't know Ken, 3 to 4 months is a long time in my world. Dusty Chalk
It can be made to work on Sprint. Or you can buy an unlocked phone from Europe.
n_maher
Yeah, AT&T's coverage around me is crap, there's no way I could have an Iphone.
naamanf
I say fuck Sprint. When I suspended my account to go on deployment they automatically added two years to my contract because it was considered a "plan change". Plus I think every one of their call centers is in the Philippines. Not sure that AT&T is much better but at least the couple times I have called customer service I got to talk to people who's first language is English. grawk
I feel for you naaman, but the deal I have with sprint is spectacular, as i've got a grandfathered sero plan. As to the "the iphone can be made to work on sprint", no it can't. It's GSM only and sprint is CDMA.
Dusty Chalk
You know, all of a sudden I remember having this conversation with you in person in front of the Borders in Gaithersburg. Nevermind. And yeah, you could, but you'd have to rewrite the operating system (to accomodate the new hardware), so I'd at least wait until it's completely open source. naamanf
I don't see a iPhone working with Sprint/Verizon until they make a CDMA version. And I don't think that's going to happen until their contract with AT&T is up. I think iPhone+Verizon=win
morphsci
I think iPhone+Verizon=win Seconded. AT&T's coverage outside of metro areas is complete crapola.

Knuckledragger
How much do unlocked/Euro iPhones go for on the grey market? My service provider is T-Mobile, but I don't have a data plan.
grawk
Unlocking an iphone is amazingly simple. Don't buy an unlocked one, just buy the cheapest one you can find, and look for "winpwn". If you get a 3g iphone you'll also need a $10 chip.
Dusty Chalk
Jailbreaking is not the same as replacing the SIM. But yes, it's cheaper and easier to unlock it yourself, just google "unlock iphone".
grawk
Yes, winpwn will get you started unlocking the phone. With the 1st gen, it's dead simple, and with the 3g, it's a little harder, but still dead simple.
Dusty Chalk
But you don't need to jailbreak your phone to unlock it. And jailbreaking it won't get you on another network, it'll just give you access to...the...phone...oh, I see, "get you started", nevermind. I've got an original 8GB iPhone siting in my desk drawer if you're looking for one. Been meaning to sell it and will happily do so at a discount to someone I already "know."
