Dusty Chalk Posted June 28, 2007 Report Posted June 28, 2007 Actually, Hirsch sold his, so he is no longer a current owner; he is a former owner. As is Juan (cd44hi).
deepak Posted June 28, 2007 Author Report Posted June 28, 2007 The L3000 has eaten up and spit out everything I've thrown at it. These are one of the most natural sounding headphones I've heard.
tkam Posted June 29, 2007 Report Posted June 29, 2007 These are one of the most natural sounding headphones I've heard. Thats why I love them, most of my music just sounds "right" with the L3000
Nanoha Posted June 29, 2007 Report Posted June 29, 2007 Perhaps it's time for me to attempt an acquisition. A few months ago, I would have definitely wanted one. But now, most asking prices are way over-the-top, and I'm running low on funds. I don't know if I'll can financially afford to have one of these in my possession. (Too many eggs in one basket; an market inflated basket.) We'll see. I might just end up with one by the end of the summer.
deepak Posted June 29, 2007 Author Report Posted June 29, 2007 These headphones were invented for Boris
deepak Posted June 29, 2007 Author Report Posted June 29, 2007 is Boris something i should check out? Do you like the Melvins? Similar to them (sludge/stoner rock) except Boris is a bit more diverse album to album. Pink is their most popular album. And probably their best.

I certainly wouldn't have sprung for them at the $2500 they seem to command sometimes nowadays, and only did so because I found a reasonable deal. I didn't get the box, but I also didn't have to pay near that much.
deepak Posted June 29, 2007 Author Report Posted June 29, 2007 There was one listed a few days ago. The seller hasn't bumped the thread yet, can't remember the asking price.
hungrych Posted June 29, 2007 Report Posted June 29, 2007 These headphones were invented for Boris Indeed!
hungrych Posted June 29, 2007 Report Posted June 29, 2007 I can't really say yet, as I definitely don't have the right tube combo yet. It certainly sounds nice, but nothing could really be worth the ridiculous bs I had to go through. Supposedly more tubes are on the way... The L3000 sounds great unamped though. EDIT: I'm running Tungsol 5998's with a Sylvania 6sn7gtb... obviously not the best combo with the L3k.
deepak Posted June 29, 2007 Author Report Posted June 29, 2007 Why not the best combination? The output tubes not that great, or you need a higher gain driver?
Nanoha Posted June 29, 2007 Report Posted June 29, 2007 Just keep an eye out for the right deal, or anyone hinting at selling one. I certainly wouldn't have sprung for them at the $2500 they seem to command sometimes nowadays, and only did so because I found a reasonable deal. I didn't get the box, but I also didn't have to pay near that much. Haha yeah. Hopefully I have enough funds to work with when something good does show up. There was one listed a few days ago. The seller hasn't bumped the thread yet, can't remember the asking price. Hmm, I think they're all gone though.
hungrych Posted June 29, 2007 Report Posted June 29, 2007 Just doesn't sound that great, from what I've read the 5998 is less "tight" sounding that I would want so it doesn't syngergize very well with the L3k, and I can definitely do better in the gain tube department. Any suggestions would also be helpful.
deepak Posted June 29, 2007 Author Report Posted June 29, 2007 In the Extreme thread Mikhail recommended the 5998 for Senns, and the 6080 for Grados. I assume this is analogous to high/low Z respectively. Someone compiled an Excel spreadsheet with tube combos/headphone synergy in the amp forum at Headfi. Worth a download- a few L3000 owners commented.
Dusty Chalk Posted June 29, 2007 Report Posted June 29, 2007 Unfortunately yes...Actually, he was really good about tubes when I bought some from him a couple months ago.
Dusty Chalk Posted June 29, 2007 Report Posted June 29, 2007 The L3000 sounds great unamped though. You mean, not plugged into anything?
Dusty Chalk Posted June 29, 2007 Report Posted June 29, 2007 These headphones were invented for Boris Boris is a chick? J/K... I always thought Boris was a he. Boris is a they?
Nanoha Posted June 29, 2007 Report Posted June 29, 2007 You mean, not plugged into anything? Oh, but his current Chinese unit has a headphone out.
deepak Posted June 29, 2007 Author Report Posted June 29, 2007 Boris is a chick? J/K... I always thought Boris was a he. Boris is a they? Wata their sexy guitar goddess. edit: they're a three piece band. PS every Boris fan needs to get Rainbow.
hungrych Posted June 29, 2007 Report Posted June 29, 2007 You mean, not plugged into anything? The leather gives a pleasant thud when flicked, much more refined than the plastic of say, HD650s.
Dusty Chalk Posted June 30, 2007 Report Posted June 30, 2007 Oh, but his current Chinese unit has a headphone out. You mean, it has a built-in headphone amp? At this point, I am just mocking you.
deepak Posted July 1, 2007 Author Report Posted July 1, 2007 These are pretty bad ass with Isis as well. I haven't really listened to Panopticon in a really long time, but this is my third play through with the L3000...sweet.
deepak Posted July 1, 2007 Author Report Posted July 1, 2007 Small update: they extend further than than the HP-2 both top and bottom. And the bass is slightly more textured and the midrange more detailed. Right now they're on par or better than the HP-2. The HP-2 has more depth to the soundstage whereas the L3000 places deep sounds slightly to the left or right instead of further out. But it still has good depth. Acoustic bass guitar is its strong point. You can feel the vibration followed by a pleasant decay. Electric guitars also sound more exciting and more twangy. Tonality of various guitars is faithfully reproduced. Best PRaT out of any headphone I've ever heard.
Nanoha Posted July 1, 2007 Report Posted July 1, 2007 Very nice. Acoustic bass guitar is its strong point. You can feel the vibration followed by a pleasant decay. Electric guitars also sound more exciting and more twangy. Tonality of various guitars is faithfully reproduced. That is exactly what I've been looking for. I've heard those descriptions time after time. It just is that good, eh? Time to update siggie?
